Something which has been complained about a lot on the forums. Most of it is actually down to map design rather than actual tank specs. The maps favor Russian tanks because they are relatively small (max 1000m x 1000 m) The 88mm on a Tiger would easily be able to engage tanks at 1500m and consistently hit the target. Russian doctrine was far more for close battle and their optics, guns were not up to the same standard as the Germans.
I think that's simply due to computing power limitations rather than favouring the russians specifically. Also once you get past level 5 and onto thr T34-85 with a 100mm gun that sniping theory goes out the window. I a mriding in a clan and participate in clan wars. If anyone is plannig on doing non random matches here is a list of what is usually preferred in end game:Heavy tanks: Russia is by far most popular (IS-7, great mobility, decent armor and firepower)
The german Maus is pretty damn indestructible but the limited mobility makes it mostly a defense tank as it is a sitting duck in an open field.
The US heavy tnaks are also ok but I see the least of them.
Medium tanks: T-54, and maybe sometimes pershing. The germans are not so popular as they tend not to have slanted armour and you hardly ever see any ricochet with them, with the T-54 you shrug off practically every other shot.
Artillery: US is the favourite, closely followed by the Russian one.
recon: T2 lt, end of discussion.
OK, I now have a fully upgraded Tiger (tracks, turret, gun, highest engine upgrade), and now working on getting the Tiger 2. The Russian tanks of similar rank to the Tiger do seem to be way too strong. I hit one of these no less than 8 times, front/sides/back, and not once penetrated the armour, no matter what type of shell I used (except damaging the tracks and turret movement) - I may as well have been firing with a loltraktor pea shooter!
I should have chosen the Russian upgrade path, their tanks are obviously superior to any other country - like the (Russian) LA7 in IL2 - arguably....

Strange one last night.... was playing as normal then found myself in a 2 tanks vs 2 tanks battle - no-one else was expecting that either! (We lost ). Next battle back to 15 a side as usual...
I am seriously wondering if I should chuck the German line and switch to Russian before I get any further, but I WANT A TIGER!!

As is historically accurate. I can charge a tiger 2 in a T43 and expect to win 9 out of 10 times.I should have chosen the Russian upgrade path, their tanks are obviously superior to any other country - like the (Russian) LA7 in IL2 - arguably....
If I see an IS-3 on the other hand I won't fight it unless I have a serious advantage (art support, terrain etc)
It's just the way they were designed. T-34 had won the war in Russia for a reason and that was that the Russian have really taken advantage of sloped armor and then with the advent of T-34-85 they basically put a bigger gun on a t34, making it good at shrugging off hits AND ventilating enemy tanks.

Just started this last night, just playing for free at the moment - is the only way to upgrade to a new tank to buy one with real money?
No, when you have fought a battle, you earn experience, research and credits. The research (and XP), once mounted up, allows you to upgrade your tank and progress to the next tier of tanks. The credits allow you to buy the newly researched tank, and buy the upgrade modules (better engine/suspesion/turret/radio/gun)It doesn't take too long to get past the 'loltraktors' - but the higher tier tanks can take a lot of 'grinding' - but it's all fun...
