RE: GT5: Worth The Wait, Or Wot?

I'm quite enjoying the game itself but I've got to take exception with yet another review going on about superb the graphics are.
They might be ok for a console but they're pretty poor next to a PC game at high res. The anti-aliasing in GT5 is almost non-existent at times.
The PS3 has 256mb of video memory... how many people run a 256mb video card and have anywhere near that level of graphics on a PC?They might be ok for a console but they're pretty poor next to a PC game at high res. The anti-aliasing in GT5 is almost non-existent at times.

So for someone who has neither PS3 nor XBox360, what is the consensus:-
1) Get PS3 and GT5 and wait for the 'upgrades' to improve the game?
2) Get an XBox E3 and Forza 3? (pending any Forza 4 release which will probably be better still)
3) Stick with the PS2 and GT3 as (ignoring the graphics) the gameplay is just as good?
If it helps, I'm not a hardcore gamer and won't have the time to spend unlocking licenses all over the place - this will be an occasional 'unwind' bit of fun for me...
Personally, as someone who has access to all 3 of the aboves options, if I had to choose one it would be option 2.1) Get PS3 and GT5 and wait for the 'upgrades' to improve the game?

I played a fair bit of Forza 3 but I never really warmed to it. The overly aggressive AI meant I just ended up trying to over power them instead of racing alongside and the rest of the career mode just bored me.
The graphics can be hit or miss.
Dodgy pixelation when water spray hits the car:
Poor standard cars.
Dodgy shadows.
Certain tracks look very poor, 2d scenery and flat dull textures.
The frame rate when the screen is busy can be poor at times as well.
There is also a LOT of screen tearing. A lot!
The lighting when you start races and licence tests makes it look like the screen is flickering as the camera moves to different angles.
I think at it's best, when you are in photo travel mode with a premium car and the game doesn't have to worry about stuff like being a racing game, it can look beautiful.
Most of the time though graphically, IMO, it's pretty average and at times terrible.

Not noticed either of these to be honest. I'm playing in 1080p and no framerate issues at all nor screen tearing. There is also a LOT of screen tearing. A lot!
Apparently the shadows are going to be improved in future patches (wouldn't hold your breath though) but the other things are most likely due to hardware limitations as both the Xbox 360 and PS3 are knocking on a bit now and it seems like PD tried to get more out of the console than it is able to give.
I'm just happy to have the game at last as when I'm travelling at speed I'm not normally admiring the scenery anyway.

LinkIt doesn't work in the same way as a graphics card on a PC.
Research that but they are incomparable iirc.

Couldn't be happier
Gt5 definatly isn't a choice for a more causual gamer lots of grinding to be done to get a decent garage togther.

Would love GT5 but would be buying a PS3 just for that reason. Tough to work out from here whether it's worth it.
it isnt (IMO)I bought a PS3, GT5 and Logitech wheel this week. £384 down and the game isnt worth it.
The choice of cars available is pitiful. the prize cars are a joke. I'm on level 13 and the most enjoyment so far have been the challenges. Unfortunately you only win money once on a challenge.
Also, the time to set it us (you need to connect to internet and update software!) the long pauses between screens, the annoyance of being told how many points you have, acknowledging the fact, then winning a car, acknowledging the fact, then being told you have paint on that car, acknowledging the fact etc etc kinda starts to grate after the first time.
Why they feel we need to confirm every purchase, and then confirm we want to fit the item is beyond me. Just slows the whole process down and becomes annoying.
Anyways, back to the game. I only game off it to make a cuppa and check my mail. See you at the next tea stop in a couple of hours
edited to add. Would it be great if your available garage for each competition was shown when you entered, instead of having to see what qualifies and then going back to the garage. Just a thought

Yeah I know, as a caveat of which you can't say that the graphics are st compared to a PC, as whichever way the cake is cut, it is still running on limited hardware.
Well it's not comparable to a PC system, so not worth going there but the game has mixed graphics, from extremely good to extremely cack. It's completely inconsistent across the board, bar the constantly awful sounds
It definitely feels like Sony said, enough release it this Christmas\winter.
I just hope there is an 8Gb download to replace it
What a load of rubbish. Shoddy graphics, terrible car handling characteristics and poor engine sounds take the edge off five years of waiting. It looks and feels like a 90s arcade game and reminds me of GT2. I stopped playing just after half an hour and what a total waste of time. Rant, rant, rant.......

I love FOrza 3, and for "pick up and play" it's got GT5 licked.
But not I'm into Gt5, I just can't get over the handling of it (with a wheel). It's pure joy to drive almost anything in the game. I can hop on and just enjoy lapping an MX-5 or a Civic Typewriter... but you have to invest a good few hours in it, and IMO the wheel and pedals make it.
Neither game is worth £250 outlay in its own right though.
bit of it really piss me off, i liked the fcat you needed the licences to progress id prefer that to the leveling system im stuck at 21 repeating silly little races over and over to buy a nascar i dont even want to race. but i do love it now havnt stopped playing since last tuesday really! got a 6:45 on the nurburgring on racing medium tyres in a GT-R @ 732bhp, 10/90 fr rear split and full weight reduction, what are other people getting? its much much harder then anything else out there the nurburgring is so bumpy you have to really feather the throttle and brake or you get thrown off line and end up on the grass and you lap being discounted. but some things drift fantasticly out the box try a sileighty on crappy tyres and smoke it up!

The Top Gear one yeah? Frustrating as hell innit! So what I did was buy me the same Elise and go hot lapping in practice mode until I could run the track within a few tenths a lap (maybe about 60 to 70 laps, PB 1:19.773). Then after another 3 goes I finally got the gold! Stupidly difficult at this early stage of proceedings but I enjoyed the challenge immensely and now feel like an Elise driving god!
P.S. GT5 is fine but nowhere near as good as expected. I run iRacing (on the PC) about 20 to 30 hours a week and need a non-serious driving sim/game just for pure fun which it fulfills very nicely. iRacing is a serious affair...
