in answer to the OP.

no.

i played it this weekend, and hated it.

i was using a friend's career s2000, a car, that in forza 3 handles very nicely.

on GT5, the car had no feel, i had no sense of the back end breaking traction, struggled to feather the throttle and balance the car nicely, this was with slicks and lots of nice upgrades.

it feels horribly dated already.

i'll stick with forza, and am glad i saved myself £250 for a ps3 and GT5 just to find out it was utter turd.

yours, a gutted racing game fan.

Well, i have not ventured in the GT5 yet and by the sounds of things won't be.

Despite not really having the time to appreciate Fallout, CODBOPS and Fifa at the moment, as well as some excellent PC stuff, from what i have heard, it's not worth it. I have Forza and think it is excellent, my only gripe with that is the fact i cannot use my Fanatec or G25 with it, otherwise it would see a lot more of me.

GT5 promised so much, but i cannot see that it has delivered on anything.

Forza, the sounds are really nice, i like the handeling, i like the massive customization, just look through the auctions and store fronts, lots of great stuff out there. I like the fact i can put a twin turbo flat 6 from a GT2 in a Porsche 914 or a RS2000 turbo in a fiesta and then make it rear wheel drive, just becasue you can.

Sounds are so important to a game, you want to rev is knackers off, the GT series have always got this badly wrong.

I can get my kicks from Iracing, GT Legends, GT Evo, Rfactor and NetKar, and if i want customisation, i can build my own damn engine and put it in a car in street leagal, even if the rest of the game is cack.

yep.

i love the fact i can make a mk2 golf 16v go off the clocks on the rev counter and that its like a mk2 inside, that i can nail some awesome drifts in an e30 m3 due to the amont of brake and throttle control available.

the only real flaw with forza 3 is that AWD rules the roost, and that there are not enough classic cars or touring cars. more tin-tops, less open-top racers would suit it better.

You're all mad, its an excellent game, the more you play it the more you realise it. I've never played Forza, but have played all the GTs and was disappointed at first, but thats probably because I've raced the Lupo, Euroboxes and other boring car races in the 4 previous GTs.

I agree its not a revolutionary life changing game, but it is thoroughly addictive and is superb at understanding our needs for driving Lambos, Ferraris and other dream cars we'll never own in the real world. I'm looking forward to getting back to it tonight and win more golds on the special events. It changed for me at about level 12 when I started to tune the GTR, and get good at the special events (e.g. the rally stages).

The graphics are excellent (not perfect) and the feel of the car is more than good enough for me. I think what you also must remember is that some people are new to GT and this is their first play, the one person I know in this position loves it. For those used to the game, its at the very least an amazing upgrade.

It clearly doesnt justify buying a console for just one game, but the PS3 has got plenty of other games and blu ray.

Initally I would have given it 6/10, now I'll happily give it 8/10.

Your doing it wrong then.

In A-spec, I don't think I've done a single race twice, that is if I've got gold the first time.

Try some of the special challenges, you get plenty of XP and money for them. Licenses are also a good xp earner early on.

theres a lot to this game drives u mad so many cars so little cash but i guess that means u will still be playing it this time next year.
bought a xj220 went to practice mode at the ring with changeable weather, it was dry, dawn, sun popping up other the trees...... i spent the lap driving not like a bat out of hell but with the tv volume up and cautiously navigateing the track just as you would if u had a xj220 on a empty nurburg and wow it was bliss edging round a blend and blasting it

The changable weather is fantastic, i did an online race at La Sarthe and the atmosphere as the sun goes up/ down really is good.

Every game has it's faults FM3 included but some will like FM3 and some will like GT5.

There both excellent games and offer different experiences but imho yes GT5 is worth it though it doesn't offerthe plug and play ability of FM3, you do have to put a bit of effort in, but isn't that the point.

Just switched on and it made me install the 1.03 update which then corrupted my install

(got the message download data is corrupt or something) just re-installing, not too bothered as I only played about thre hours on Sunday so can make that up but tread carefully guys, maybe worth backing up your save before install.

Really piss poor though, its almost as Apple for updates!

What, you mean it deleted what you have done so far?! If that happened I would not be happy at all. How do you ‘back up your save’ as you say above?

I also installed 1.03 yesterday, first time it said install corrupted so I just downloaded it again and it installed fine. The install deleted my stealth cars (a freebie from Amazon- I guess I can reload them?) but didn’t delete or reset anything else, it asked me if I wanted to download the whole 8gb to my HDD which I had already done on day one (so I said no, don’t think loads were slower so guess message is an error…), it still says my time and date is incorrect, but it isn’t, apart from these small bugs im getting into it. Like all versions of GT, it takes quite a few hours to open up and get used to.

Like the chap above, initially I rated 6/10, now im feeling 8/10 also and I think it will get better.

You can't back up your dave yet. That functionality is rumoured to be coming in a further patch expected before the end of December.

For all those complaining that GT5 has no feel compared to Forza. Can I put it that it maybe you who is lacking in feel? I play both and Forza is certainly more of an arcade game than a sim compared to GT5. Using a proper wheel and pedal setup highlights this for me. I have also see most of my friends struggle with GT5 initially compared to Forza. With the fastest more race focused cars you are required to be alot more smooth and precise with your driving inputs to keep the cars on the road.

At least nobody has preffered Need for Speed.

Could you drift a highly tuned S2000 on slicks in real life?

Try running the S2000 wihtout any mods on sports hard or comfort soft tyres... this will give you a much more effective representation of the physics engine in GT5... with a decent wheel (G25/G27) you should have no problem finding the balance point.

Tuning in GT5 has to be done with sympathy... the urge to chuck £200k+ of upgrades at relatively modest cars needs to be resisted... cars are almost always nicer to drive as they come, or with the adjustable suspension to optimise the handling and maybe one of two minor power upgades.

There are some major irritations with GT5, but the car handling model is not one of them... it feels utterly lovely.

I've had the game a few days and i'm level 21 now. This levelling system is really starting to get on my nerves. I don't understand the point of it. I'm having to grind the same race after race for hours in order to get the cars I need to progress. Unlike in GT4 the cars you win are often worse than the cars you actually need to win the race. You cannot win the really expensive cars through prizes. Instead you have repeatedly do the same races over and over. How your ever meant to buy the 20Million F1 car is beyond me. That would take days and days of saving. Probably 200+ races.

I enjoyed the game up till now but its repetitiveness is wearing thin. I can't unlock any more special events (endurance levels) till level 25, by which time I probably will have given up with the game.
+1 I'm only at level 15 but the crappy prize cars are getting really annoying - seriously how many underpowered Japanese super minis do I really need? Forza did this much better - generally most of the prize cars were actually useful in some later event.

I agree

In GT5 the prize cars are generally the sort of things you'll never touch

In answer to the original post, not it was most definitely not worth the wait. I think it is pretty mediocre, and no different to any other recent driving games i have played.

Not impressed at all, and my copy is already gathering dust

Beat me to it. Poster wonders why he can't drift on........ SLICKS!!banghead Just about sums up the level of this thread - a mix of those that understand this game was developed for people who understand cars (deeply) and those who would be much better served by F3 and are quite welcome to it.

Everything you said about not needing to throw loads of cash at the cars is spot on.

I'm level 20 and went online for the first time last night, blasting around the Nurbergring with a couple of other Brits (all in Skylines) has to be one the best gaming experiences I've had to date.

/G27, all aids off, simulation wheel settings.
