RE: GT5: Worth The Wait, Or Wot?

Oh one last point, dont bother buying a surround system for GT5, the car sound effects are weak, very weak. High in the revs they just drone, there isnt even any echo in tunnels.
So not much change from GT4 then? I remember the McLaren f1 racer sounding like a hair dryer. The engine noises on the NFS games were much closer to the real thing imo.Sounds seem to be a bit hit an miss. The classic muscle cars sound epic, McLaren F1 a little synthetic. They tend to sound a bit better from outside. With surround sound I get a nice burble from the rear speakers when in the interior view of my '69 Camaro.

I dont rate GT5 or FM3 to be honest, what one does well the other does poorly and vice-versa. My problem with both is the driving experience; feels slow, sterile and very very dull.
I'm pinning my hopes on Rfactor 2 being out in the not too distant future . . . putting the money I would have wasted on a PS3 into a decent pc instead is a much wiser investment.

When the first announced it, people were saying it was going to be launched at the same time as the launch of Kinect (it has kinect support too) seems now everywhere just says 2011...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pEhOiYVxcEg
Looks stunning!
One thing I hated about the GT series - the cars handeling. Meant to be super real but ended up being super annoying and the under steer was rife on most cars! It may have been 'realistic', but it was sure boring. If I wanted realism I would go to a track day or get out in my own car. I want playability and fun. Won't be parting with my cash no matter how good the graphics!
My wife and two kids mean that games are generally a thing of the past but gt5 is different so ive found the time to play it (about 30mins a nite when kids are in bed). Games like this are so impressive now that they are perfectly acceptable for adults IMHO. I'm glad gt5 has finally arrived and I look forward to playing computer games with my kids as they grow up
I was a GT fan for years and have owned and played all the previous versions. I went over to the "dark side" with Forza 3 as I got fed up waiting for GT5 through all the release dates that came and went without fruition.
I bought a PS3/GT5 bundle from Tesco the very same day it came out, and can say it's not a driving simulator - how can a 69 Camaro out-brake a Focus RS on a mountain stage FFS - so I was initially disappointed.
Loads of snow around here meant a few days of work, so I found myself sat at home driving a Cobra Mustang SVT around LeMans for hours. I watched the sun go down and the fireworks go up; Ferris wheel looking amazing at night. This totally changed my mind about the game, I chased a sub 5 minute lap for hours and hours and hours. When it arrived, I was so pleased that the £269 felt worth every penny. Buy it.

***IMO***
It's bks.
Playability: It has slight handling improvements over GT4, but otherwise is still clumsy on a gamepad. The game just hasn't played well on a pad since GT2. I suspect on a wheel it's ok, though I just CBA with a wheel. Forza 3 just arses it in this dept.
Graphics: It's damned pretty, but it suffers from very apparent tearing. The car models look amazing. But only under scrutiny. In reality I prefer the smoother graphics in F3 to the better, but glitchier graphics of GT5. The difference between the two, in quality terms is way smaller than you'd expect.
Gameplay: You still bounce off the scenery rather than having any sort of realistic impact. The AI of the other drivers is unchanged from GT4 and you can still win just about every race by overpowering your car and barging through. Again, in Forza the cars have real weight and have real consequences on impacts. The AI is certainly better as is the racing.
Over all that's 3-0 to Forza 3. I couldn't be more dissapointed with GT5, what the fk has he been doing for the last 5 years?! Oh and I'm not some sort of Xbox evangelist before you start. I sold my first Xbox after completing F2 in anticipation of GT5... In the meantime F3 came out and I ended up buying another purely to play it (in fact it's the only game I own for it). I only think this game would have been impressive had it been the release title originally planned for the PS3.

Exactly, the game gives back what you put in. The more I play the more I realise the quality that is abundant in this release.I bought a PS3/GT5 bundle from Tesco the very same day it came out, and can say it's not a driving simulator - how can a 69 Camaro out-brake a Focus RS on a mountain stage FFS - so I was initially disappointed.

@ ellisd82 - Sounds like you've made the classic error of many before you.... You realise you have to turn driver aids off and set handling to either pro or sim right??? Do that and take the a RWD supercar round the ring, you should be able to feather you throttle inputs and dab the brakes on entry in order to execute a controlled loss of traction to bring the rear end round... as you would in reality. What you described in terms of gameplay is exactly what happens if you leave all the TCM etc on and just drive round on rails.... great.
You say you've played the game before but frankly YOU'VE NEVER PLAYED THE GAME until you set it up correctly.

I've played with aids on and off and tbh it's still a poor game, pretty but poor in the way it plays.
I've never taken a game back to the shop. Until I bought GT5.
I understand that it is a matter of opinion, but it is the most disappointing game I've played on any format.
It took 40 minutes before I could even play the game for the first time. The loading time in between screens is laughable. I installed the game to the HD but it makes little difference. The 'home' screen is a muddle and difficult to navigate smoothly. There is not over 1000 cars available to play. There's maybe 250 available to play and most of them are standard cars which have been lifted straight from the PSP version and look dreadful. You can't modify the appearance of standard cars in any way. There is no option to modify or upgrade the braking systems on any car. The first special challenge on the Top Gear Test Track is just plain boring. You can't do a standing start on the TGTT. You can't race the reasonably priced cars on TGTT because they're not in the game. You can't lap the nurburgring nordschliefe until you've unlocked it! The number of events in the main game is pathetic, especially compared to Forza 3 (some "events" consist of one 3 or 4 lap race). The detailing and shading on vehicles is embarrassing. The AI opponents are poorly programmed, just holding a line regardless of where you place your car on track. They brake about 100 yards too early for each corner and you can't adjust the AI difficulty. When you win an event you are awarded a car which is appropriate to race in that event which you have just finished. The damage is only available on premium cars and even then it is far from realistic. The licence tests are fun but, unlike previous games in the franchise, they are not required to progress through the game so what is the point? I could go on for some considerable time but you get the idea.
Polyphony digital have really missed a trick here. It should have been the best console racing game by some margin, especially considering the time taken to produce it. Yamauchi and his team focussed too much on trying to make the game 'real', and in doing so have lost sight of why we buy video games in the first place. To have fun. I'm sure many will disagree with me but GT5 fails to be fun on so many levels and in so many ways.
Forza 3 (which was released over a year earlier than GT5) wipes the floor with it in every way.
It's simply not good enough and as such, is not worth the money. DO NOT BUY THIS GAME.

Given the criticism for both FM3 and GT5, what is the PH opinion on Race Driver Grid?
It's getting on in years (by comparison) but for me, TOCA was always more enjoyable to play than GT. It had much better AI and better car dynamics, IMO.
I wasn't impressed with Race Driver Grid - I believe many feared, including myself, that Codemasters were going to 'transplant' the handling and physics from Grid into F1 2010. Thankfully, they didn't! It's getting on in years (by comparison) but for me, TOCA was always more enjoyable to play than GT. It had much better AI and better car dynamics, IMO.
F1 2010 has received a slating for bugs, but to be honest I have experienced very few whilst playing through multiple championships. F1 is one of my favourite games to use with a steering wheel - Excellent feedback, fantastic wet weather graphics and superb AI.
Forza 3 is more polished than GT5 and if I had the choice between the two, I would choose Forza 3 with no hesitation. However GT5 does include some minor details that Forza 3 missed out, including lots of tyre smoke, flames from exhaust on downshifts and the ability to have bright white alloys. I find these add to my enjoyment of GT5, and GT5 is a good game, just not as good overall as Forza ...
ETA: Apologies for poor grammar - In a rush to a meeting!

I quite enjoyed race driver grid, probably because of the little things like sponsership, having a partner and the fact it doesn't take itself so seriously. Also wasn't 6 years in production it just appeared. A refreshing change and a good blend between sim and arcade. It's getting on in years (by comparison) but for me, TOCA was always more enjoyable to play than GT. I liked the idea of having your own team with it's own sponsors and identity. That's something GT should have done. That and having rivalries with other computer controlled teams, not just randomly named drivers in random cars. Having team livery (even if preset like Grid) would also be nice. Given the time they had they could have easily pinched all these good ideas from other games. Oh well.
