RE: GT5: Worth The Wait, Or Wot?

I quite enjoyed race driver grid, probably because of the little things like sponsership, having a partner and the fact it doesn't take itself so seriously. Also wasn't 6 years in production it just appeared. A refreshing change and a good blend between sim and arcade.
Another balanced post I feel sorry for you if your enjoyment of a game really depends on how long it took to make.FWIW I think GT5 is heavily compromised by bugs, poor design decisions and a lack of imagination. What really counts against it is that these negatives are apparent from the outset, whereas the positives take some time to come to the surface. But when it finally clicks - if you can make it past the initial frustration and disappointment - it's well worth the effort!

Given the criticism for both FM3 and GT5, what is the PH opinion on Race Driver Grid?
It's getting on in years (by comparison) but for me, TOCA was always more enjoyable to play than GT. It had much better AI and better car dynamics, IMO.
GRID is enjoyable. The handling is no Gran Turismo and very much more arcade. It's getting on in years (by comparison) but for me, TOCA was always more enjoyable to play than GT. It had much better AI and better car dynamics, IMO.
But that aside has some nice features. I quite like having my own team however trivial the management of it is and the ability to select various designs and race colours.
Need for Speed Shift isn't bad either. Again no GT in the handling stakes but some nice touches. Despite being a huge GT fan I'm a sucker for being able to mod my cars. Has some decent challenges too. ie. RS4 v M3 on a section of the Ring. I also like the mid-race replay option. Screw up a corner or get a bit lazy and crash on the last lap you can rewind the race and continue from before the accident. Some might not like it but for someone not prepared to sit done for hours and just wants quick, easy and enjoyable racing its not bad.
was it worth the wait.... well that depends on how you waited, if you spend the last five year talking about continuously then the chances are you've built it up in your head to something it will never be... then no it's probably not worth the wait! However if you lived in the real world where not everything is perfect then the chance are you'll happy with the final product. Sure it's far from perfect, but it has a lot going for it! Enjoy it for what it is, not what it could have been!

only 1000 ish cars.
Pathetic for a ps3 and the dual layer double sided technology thats out...
Was expecting at least in the region of about 2000, twice as many as gt3 n ps2. The graphics are very similar and the ps2 it 10x less powerfull then the ps3 ....letdown ! No real hurdle.
Personally I don't think how many cars are in it makes it a poor game, 500 well modelled individual cars with good sounds would easily be enough for me.Pathetic for a ps3 and the dual layer double sided technology thats out...

That read like the sort of guff you'd get from a footballer after a match. I've been lurking on there recently and their level of whinging has reach an all time high, its been driving me mad. I spend a lot of time on various different forums but they're a different breed over there, it's a great site with lots to offer but IMO its ruined by mentals one who take it far too seriously.

100-200 would have been fine. Shift filled that void for me personally, as I find FM3 clinical but better than GT5 - so I'm happy with one game anyway
It's almost like they didn't have a market research, from mixed gamers (to get the interface, playability nailed) and proper drivers (for the feel, although it's ok).
Hopefully they will address some issues but I fear that we are doomed for the worst sounding cars, and clunky interface. We'll probably just get cars and tracks.

Didn;t realise Shift had so many cars, might have to play it more.

Don't worry - a few years ago he decided to hang around on the Corvette section too, assuming because he'd had to replace the rubbish engine in his TVR with a Corvette one suddenly we'd all be his friends.Unfortunately due to his ability to make friends in the way only he knows how, at the time the forum outlasted him.
Hey ho.
Would love GT5 but would be buying a PS3 just for that reason. Tough to work out from here whether it's worth it.
To be honest, for the amount of free time I get to play games like these, my old faithful GT Legends still gets my thumbs up. Hooked up to good quality PC speakers, the sound is great, and the handling very tuneable.
Old, but still good for a laugh Wish they'd update that.

Exactly the same situation I was in.At the end of the day, we all want a decent 'realistic' game to enjoy, no matter what platform it's on (although pref console, easier ).
I was lucky that a good friend lent me his PS3 on Monday night, and I have GT5 from tesco game rental.
I'm really glad I've been given a chance to borrow it, as it's saved me £250-300 on purchasing a PS3/GT5. Definitely not worth it.
If you already had a PS3, then it might be worth picking up as it's only going to cost up to £40, just don't expect it to set your pants on fire.
Definitely worth giving it a go, head over to a mates place with it, or find a nice friendly shop that will let you play it for a while (I did that last week as well).
Nah don't agree at all with any of you. I played all gt's to death. I caned the 5hit out of them. 1000 cars is just not enough variety
Gt2 on the ps2 had over 1000 cars - that handled and performed differently to each other .... nearly 15 years ago.
This is the PS3 we're talking about so no doubt the graphics would be better anyway... Variety is key and it doesnt cut it. It should have every car on Pistonheads at least ... racing modifications (there were hundreds of these on gt1 and 2 ... based on real cars) are not included either.
Even the smoke trails are 5hit and no better then gt3 ... I was expecting you could leave skid marks on the road at least and burnout smoke in the for about 30 secs or so not even that.
I wouldnt call it a failure but like the title questions was it worth the wait ? No it wasnt. Ruashed and lacking.

I'm thinking about getting a PS3 and GT5 but have a few basic questions (I know less than fk all about computers/consoles/internet....)
Can I buy the game and race on the Nürburgring straight away (all I did on GT4 was 2 player races on the 'ring in Arcade mode)? Is there a 2 player split screen mode like GT4?
Is it worth getting a headset so I can chat while racing online? I've never played any online games before but whenever I see it on TV they are wearing a headset and chatting while playing - is that the done thing?
Is it necessary to get anything other than the cheapest 160GB PS3?

Can I buy the game and race on the Nürburgring straight away (all I did on GT4 was 2 player races on the 'ring in Arcade mode)? No, you have to either race in A-Spec or do some of the license challenges to unlock the Nurburgring in Arcade Mode.

Is it necessary to get anything other than the cheapest 160GB PS3? I bought the 160GB model for GT5 - More than adequate!
