I'm going to buy a camcorder almost exclusively to use with the pro mount on my Ariel Atom and I need to call upon the collected wisdom of the mighty PH'ers.

Ideally:

Mini DV (top loading)
Excellent image stabilising
Not too expensive (in case it gets hit by gravel) - probably around £500-£700? (less would be nice!)

Any suggestions (with reasons why, please)?

Also, anything else I should be looking for in a spec list?

Thanks!

Have you thought about mounting it out of sight, and using a bullet cam instead? That will keep it out the way any gravel or flies!

DON'T DO IT

Get a Sony bullet cam and a digi cam with audio/video in (the yellow one). Then you can mount the cam anywhere you want. More info on request.

I used a bullet cam for the first time recently out in the Isle of man, simply gaffer taping it in various places around the car gave great footage that you couldnt achieve with a camcorder on its own. Sound quality wasnt to bad either using the supplied mic that came with the kit

I applied a clear low tack vinyl on to the paintwork first so the gaffer tape adhesive wouldn't adhere to the paint

Just thought I'd throw this 2 mb vid into the thread, taken from the bullet cam (not me driving at 130 in 6th on the grass I have to add).

Great little video, it is better quality than I thought from a bullet cam, sound is good too.
Nice one

OK - I'm convinced - a bullet cam it is then. Now I have to find somewhere to strap the camcorder that won't shake it to bits

I've got a Sony DCR-HC40

Used it pistonfest in rviants ferrari, you can find the video from it in the pistonfest section.

You can get a version without the stills option for less.

I got the bullet from www.rfconcepts.co.uk

They are also good at telling you whether your video camera has the right connection.

This is where I generally fitted mine on the Caterham (the windscreen washer hole!), with the camera in a camera bag in the footwell.

One of the best places is your body! When I was fit and did downhill mountain biking I did the odd video. I took the attitude that if I could take it, the cam could! Was a pain in the arse when crashing however (literally).

What's a footwell? There's nothing to stop it from going out sideways in an Atom!

I reckon a mobile DVR is the way to go as opposed to a camcorder like the ones on f1camera.com

Bruce,

Just seen this thread.

Looks like you know have the perfect set up with the helmet cam!

BTW: I met you at the Goodwood trackday. It was me with the Blue Griff.
