battery off ebay
Discussion
I've got a canon ixus 500. I'm after a second battery and have seen them on ebay for a few quid (from £4.00) these are not the genuine canon article.
This represents a rather large saving, I wondered if anyone had bought any non same as camera branded batteries and if there were any pitfalls.

I've bought a couple of spare batteries for my Ixus 330 from E-bay, and despite the fact that they are a higher mAh rating ( up to 25% ) they don't seem to last as long as the original Canon battery. I suppose I did get both batteries for less than the price of 1 Canon original so it's still a good deal but I only use them as a back up and keep the Canon one for main use.

Yep, I bought a non-Nikon battery for the D70: slightly higher capacity than the proper one and a fraction of the price, even allowing for shipping from the US. It works fine and is uncannily similar to the genuine article.
Could you post details as to where you got, that? I'll be ordering one too.

Two posts up! 'I got my eBay purchase from Broadway Electronics (would have posted link but for some reason Exporer decided not to show it). They still have many for sale.'

What sort of trouble? And which seller did you get them from (there seem to be lots of battery sellers on Ebay)

The Sony InfoLITHIUM system passes info so the camera displays how strong the battery is.. this (I think) was the problem: the battery was OK but these comms let it down. Camera switched itself off even though the cell was healthy. Mailed tham couple of times but not much help. The price was about a third compared to the UK, mind. SInce then I've bought a £50 Energizer one that lasts all day.. wish I'd spotted this one before

I'm sure they do this kind of thing just to make you buy their expensive batteries, a bit like Epson chipped cartridges. Lots of camera equipment has a battery level LCD but it doesn't need special batteries to work. Grr!
