For what you want to do I'm really not sure, I'm guessing you want to use a chest mount or something?
BTW the Sony FDR-X3000 is the best there is at the moment.
Sony is better in low light
Sony has optical stabilisation (which can't be underestimated, it is a major thing)
Sony has higher bit rate
Sony has better audio + 3.5mm jack input.
Sony generates time code (if you need that sort of thing)
But over all this, forget reading specs, they mean nothing if your footage is shaky.
60fps is really only needed if you are going to do some slow motion stuff. (which the GoPro @ 4K won't do anyway)
Not much help am I

I appreciate your efforts either way. But I'm doing that classic internet thing of going out, asking for advice, then ignoring it because what I really wanted was re-affirmation of my original decision.BTW the Sony FDR-X3000 is the best there is at the moment.

The hardware specs on Sony are good, granted. But all the reviews I've read talk about how clunky the interface is, how it's difficult to use, how it lags for 5 seconds turning on etc. Compare that to the Garmin (for instance.) Decent voice control for a start, and if I want to be fancy I can control it from my watch. Likewise voice control on the GoPro. And usability is key for me - I've sacked off taking my phone out of my race vest and opening the camera app because I was just too exhausted, and when working out how to put an energy gel wrapper in my pocket was just too damned complicated. If it's fiddly or means I'll miss the moment - it's out. Paper specs are meaningless in that context and unless Sony have improved somehow that's just not an option.
Which brings me back to the Garmin or GoPro.
For an idea of my intended use, I'm mostly planning on using it on a grip/extension arm - yes, more wobble, but much more interesting perspectives are possible than with a chest mount. Basic idea being to put the foreground interest (me) into the context of the places I'm running (hopefully beautiful mountains and coastlines.)
My thoughts are - right now - to look at the Garmin. The voice controls are apparently slightly better, and the ability to connect with other sensors seamlessly (heart rate etc) to create a contextual data overlay sounds good from a sports perspective. The trade off for that is lower FPS for those nice slow motion shots that actually do a good job of taking the edge off some of the shakiness anyway.
I've been impressed by the IS offered by Youtube when using my phone for trail running video. It's not perfect, but it's not bad either. I suspect either Garmin or GoPro will be in the ballpark.
I may just end up buying the first I see on a good deal though at this rate, because both have minor pro's and con's and all of those are relevant to me and I suspect I'll be happy with either. Probably.
I saw a deal on the Virb Ultra 30 before I saw one on the GoPro, so I've now got one sitting in front of me.
Mounting question:
I've already got a (chinese knock-off) 3 way arm which I'm anticipating using for running. But I'd also like to be able to then transfer it onto a clip type mount to attach to my running vest (kit carrying type, not the skimpy lycra kind of vest) for some POV style footage.
Is there a QR type system that wouldn't be too heavy that I can use to quickly change from one to the other?
ETA:
The Virb does come with some of Garmin's own QR mounts, but the 'female' part of the mounts are only adhesive pads and I can't see anywhere anything on the 'female' mount side that I could a) attach to a vest and b) attach to an arm.
I think I could bastardise this for the vest maybe, but not for the arm:

Quick question, just bought myself a sony point and shoot camera, but now going on some beach locations thinking of a gopro. More crap to lug around, and dont really want a lump, whats a good multi tasker that I can take scuba diving and snorkling as well as messing around with on the beach?
Just going to take a few light moves of splashing around.
How easy is it to downscale the movies for stuff like facebook and instagram? Does it come with basic video editing software?

Gopro session with a floaty grip would meet your requirements I think.
No need to process anything really, FB and IG will do that for you anyway.
You can get a refurbished session direct from GoPro for £119 inc P&P floaty grip is £18 and after using one for exactly what you need I was really impressed (although on the hero5)No need to process anything really, FB and IG will do that for you anyway.

Where can I find the refurbs? I'm thinking of getting a session 5 edit...
I found it, right at the bottom of the website.
Cheers for pointing it out!

Here's a video from my Nikon Keymission 360 Camera, taken on board my Caterham 620R on a lap Curborough Sprint course.
I've been playing with some of the settings of the camera, and whilst there is some wind noise, it is mounted on the front of the windscreen, it's much better now.

That wind noise is much better?? The 360 worked although slightly dark but I’d scrap the audio and use a separate recording setup. I've been playing with some of the settings of the camera, and whilst there is some wind noise, it is mounted on the front of the windscreen, it's much better now.

I keep dipping out of this subject but now I've got some familiarity with the basic software I'm pulling the trigger today on new software. I've tried and liked (but don't feel they're comprehensive enough) both GoPro and Virb Edit for use with my Virb Ultra 30 footage.
It's between PowerDirector 15 and Premiere Elements 15 right now. I'm veering towards the former, but can't really see a huge difference between them. Anything I'm missing?

I know cheap and video editing don’t come hand in hand but for the limited videos I edit it seems pointless spending a small fortune on something I don’t really use but my old laptop is starting to buckle when editing. I don’t want to go desktop so any sub £500 laptops that will do an adequate job?

I don't really know the requirements for video editing (I assume multi-core processor, plenty of ram, fast drives, perhaps decent graphics card), but there are usually some absolute bargains second hand on eBay. The £150 reconditioned HP Elitebook I bought off there runs as well as the £500 new Dell I use for work. For £4-500 I would think you could get a pretty good spec laptop on there.http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lenovo-Thinkpad-E560-i7-...
I don't know whether this or the cycling section is the best place to ask this, but I'm trying to use my Sony AS30V when I'm on my bike. It's not for angry Youtube videos, I don't really go on the road, but more for riding offroad and recording my son who has just got his first bike. I bought a helmet mount that was basically a velcro strap that goes through the helmet vents, but it wouldn't sit still enough to be useful. So I bought a handlebar mount and that is okay, but as I'm aiming to record my son, I would rather it was on my helmet. My helmet has no flat surfaces, so the adhesive ones that come with the camera don't work. Any ideas? I have several adapters to fit it to a GoPro mount.

It died at 4k.
I upgraded to a top spec Dell XPS15. It's dreamy.

i use this site to configure my last few desktops and they're about as good as you'll get for your money. You can save and spend where you want to. Not sure how the laptops would stack up to full on video editing but they have my vote for somewhere to start
