Where would we be without Gaffer tape?

Good tip BTW.

I'm still hoping for an Inspire 2. Camera RAW charges are a joke though IMO.

Yeah - its a big jump in cost from the X5 to the X5r - but then i cant think of many video camera at that price that are capable of 4k video capture, in 12 bit raw.

Its a shame the X5 cant take raw photos though - it wouldnt need large data rates for that, so in theory could record them to the SD card.

Very nice purchase.

I sometimes work as a drone camera op on some jobs. - The smart design and flight capability of the Inspire, always impresses me!

i was lucky enough to be working in Sweden a few weeks ago, where we go to film some amazing landscapes. Cold was a real issue for batteries- our drone pilot had battery warmers, a cool box with hot water bottles in - which all worked great. But we didn't think about the iPad batteries! the iPads for the controllers, were of course, out in the open elements, and they'd get to 50% battery and cut out. 10 minutes in the car warming up and they were fine again. We ended up gaffer taping hand warmers to the back of the iPads, which kept them working all day.

The X5 camera is well worth it. Its great being able to pop on a longer lens - harder shots to pull off, but tracking shots of vehicles etc, look great with a tighter lens. Also the X5 holds up reasonably well in low lighting - I was surprised. With a fast lens, and pushing the ISO a bit, it coped quite well even just after sunset!
Thanks, I think I'll hold on for a while and get the use out of the x3 before upgrading. I'm already finding the Inspire a bit of a pain to transport and carry compared to the Phantom.. Worth the effort though smile

It's the X5S with all the processing now done on the Drone that's an issue for me.

They are then asking $1000 for a CDNG license, plus £900 for a 480mb SSD.

In comparison Panasonic want $100.00 for their V-log video option and look at the flack they are taking over that.

I hadn't read into it in detail before - 1000 for the codec license! Madness.

Its odd isnt it - when we physically get something for out extra cash, its fine, but paying extra for software to unlock whats already there, always feels a bit off.

I can't see a lot of people getting the inspire 2 + X5S combo, at those prices

My Mavic has finally been dispatched, hoping to receive it today.

Have just returned from a week in Iceland :-( could have done with it a couple of weeks ago!

Enjoy! I would love a Mavic for its portability but the lead times put me off.

Haven't been out with my Inspire for a while, a couple of others I took

Having upgraded from the Phantom 2 Vision+ to the Mavic I am massivley impressed.

I have only had a couple of short test flights but such a difference!

Hoping to get out this weekend and give it a proper run out.

Will post pictures/video if I get anything good

I'm still flying a Vision 2+ and thinking of upgrading to a Mavic or a P4 - I guess the photos and videos are a massive improvement, and also the portability?

It would be good to hear from someone with experience of using the P4 and Mavic.

Portability is obviously a massive improvement. I used to lug my P2V+ around in the backpack when on my motorbike and then up hills etc. It was awkward and uncomfortable. The mavic packs away so small and will fit in alongside other stuff in a normal backpack or in the shoulder bag I got with it.

The image quality is much improved. One of the biggest advantages I've noticed so far is the screen resolution when flying. Now it's HD it makes it much easier to see what it's looking at.
There is a lot of settings to play with for both picture and video. Low light quality looks to be massively improved.

The smart flight modes are very impressive too, active tracking etc is astonishingly clever

Into the West - a return home from 15,500 ft out with my Phantom 3 Advanced.
I think you need to have a look at http://dronesafe.uk/drone-code/

That was a long way to stay in visual range.

Isn't 400 meters the maximum we're allowed, as that's what's defined as the visual limit?

I'm so glad my mavic can work from 4km away.

400 feet above ground level in height. 500 feet in horizontal distance. In practice that 500 feet is what the CAA consider to be visual range. I guess it depends on the size and colour of the UAV, and one's own eyesight whether they could justify visual range being any further than that. I would have a healthy dope of scepticism though...

I used to loose sight of my phantom just from watching it then looking down at the screen and back again...probably less than 400ft away too!

500m laterally for visual line-of site, Max height 400ft (122m).

Gave the Mavic a good run out over the weekend. Love the portability of it, much easier to lug about than the old Phantom.

Still need to play with photo and video settings to get the best from it. Unfortuantley my Macbook has decided to end its life so can't edit anything.

Did have a bit of a moment when doing a 'follow me' shot whilst I was sat in the boot of the car (on private land)

Had been driving about half a mile and it suddenly lost connection and decided to return to home...half a mile away (didn't even think about this at the time!)

Luckily it was a wide open space so it made it's way home and was found hovering where it had took off from.

Won't be making that mistake again!

Lucky! can we set the home point to be the controller location?
