They're airbags for bad landings - a previous flight resulted in a slightly crushed cabin.

Yep, I see what they are for and that they are not permanent deployments but even so I assume that they have to obscure the view during lending if they are deployed as a matter of course during the activity.

If they are only for a developing emergency then I assume visibility is of lower importance by then!
It lands pretty much vertically straight down at low speed, a bit like a chopper, so visibility either side isn't of any significance at that point. They're to protect the cabin which is probably the most solid and most vulnerable part of the craft aside from the side and rear turbines. Anything which happens to be directly underneath the Airlander when it lands is just going to be bounced off smile
