I took this in South Africa, one of few landscape shots taken on the holiday as there were far more interesting subjects that had claws and teeth.
I thought at the time it would be well worth processing, but now I'm back it's more meh. I think it's the lack of definite subject.

Happier with this one

Excellent Matt clap

Do you have a similar set up to Rob or something less complex?
I don't quite have the equipment and I definitely can't match the talent!

I'm using a Nikon D750 and a Samyang 14mm F2.8, the distortion of a wide angle lens does lead to some problems trying to stitch panoramas.
Cheers for the info - great result smile

No, I got a ride up in a cat, it would be a long walk!

Couple of questions if you don't mind;

- How do you avoid distortion in your panoramas? I find that to achieve a true horizon means the sky becomes progressively more stretched to the point that the stars are oval, the only way I can find to avoid it is to have a curved horizon which looks even worse!

- The sharpness and clarity of the stars in your pictures, is it down to the lens or something else?
The 14mm will distort the view i prefer 35 or 50 for stitching. MW being high will cause perspective issues when stitching too, I tend to shoot 360s then , having frames both left and right stops some distortion. I use as good a prime as I can, the sy14 is ok but not really a pano lens
Thanks for that, I didn't get the 14mm with the intention of doing panos, but until I get something else, it's the most suitable lens I have. I would ideally like a 35mm F1.4, but it's out of my price range really, a 50mm is more affordable, but it would require a lot of shots to produce one image.

I only ever shoot a 50 on my gigapan/iPano.

the sy 24mm is a decent compromise and not super expensive

As I was born in Hull and watched the building of the bridge every time I travelled to see family, I've been meaning to get some photos for ages. Finally dragged myself out of bed early enough to get sunrise through the bridge.

I'm a bit late to the 'mirrorless' party...but decided to pick up a secondhand Fuji X-E1 to use with adaptors and all my lovely old Pentax SMC manual lenses and also my m42 lens collection.

another factor was to get something smaller and lighter than my usual Pentax K3 so that I am more likely to take a camera with me... smile

I know the X-E1 is seen as a bit 'old hat' nowadays but i am quite pleased so far with the results using these older lenses.

Are these photo's of the Milky way just down to software manipulation or can a casual observer see as such?

A little of both.

In a good dark location you can easily see the MW once your eyes have adjusted to the dark.

But the camera can pick up a lot more stars, its high iso fast lenses and long exposure helps there.
Also your eyes switch to black and white in low light so you wont see any real colour

then we potatoshop the hell out of them....

From light to dark, Using a snappy Sony 5100 so really small. Fit it into a pocket, old but easy to carry

I like photo's that tell a story rather than just looking at whether ISO 243 or ISO 244 should be used, ie MY DOG WALK

That's just me though. biggrin

One day maybe I will get that far to do the same. I have a degree in Astronomy and have taken lots of photos through a telescope but still just into photography. It does not seem real.

You can tell be my post above I am more down to earth still. Dog gets bored whilst I snap biggrin

I dont add or remove anything(significant..) nor blend shots from different places or times.

I do try to make pretty pictures though.

Not an amazing photo but the subject is to me.

I have done a lot of work this year for the sports clothing company O'Neal but seeing your latest 2018 catalogue shoot 10 foot high on the walls of their stand at the worlds largest cycle exhibition today is a pretty cool moment!
