Thanks. Are you able to say why you prefer v.2? I still can't decide myself. It's for a big canvas and Photobox's 40% off will end tomorrow so need to decide pretty quickly.

Purely personal of course but for me the brightness of the candle is a bit overpowering in the first and I like the smoke in the second smile

My 2c. I think picture 2 has more bite but picture 1 has better lighting.

Good point, I see what you mean. I can tone it down quite a bit as I shot two versions and have them in layers, one with flash and the other is a long exposure lit by the candle and some ambient, so I'll try masking in the flash version and vary the opacity of the mask til it calms down a bit.

I also prefer 2 (marginally) but in both the blown highlights grab my attention. I have a thing about blown "spot" highlights being toned down as far as possible.

Not so bad if the print media is forgiving.

I suspect they are quite reasonable in terms of the image you are creating ... but just grab my attention more than I want them to.

Sad huh?

It's entirely reasonable to be put off an image by one's personal bête noires. I have some of my own, and I find if difficult to resist commenting on them when a reasonable opportunity to do so presents itself, especially if I really really like the picture otherwise (as has been the case with a couple of Dibby's).

Personally though, I like the highlights but I can why other people would like them knocked back a bit.

Thanks for the understanding.

I have to say that I really enjoy seeing your work and always like the composition and subject matter. It's not the sort of thing I would be likely to shoot, lacking artistic ability. But I enjoy it when someone else does it so well.
