I'm after a Sony TV (not a monster great thing, it wouldn't fit in Dibble Towers).

Does anyone have any recommendations on websites or suppliers?

I saw a "last year's model" at Curry's or Comet, inc built in "Freeview" for £400ish, 28" screen. Should I go for that?

I can only afford the "free" channels, only got 4 1/2 at the moment.

Sony is good, but is it that good? You could get another brand 28" TV, and Sky for a year for the same money...

What can I say? I like Sony stuff.

I'd rather eat my own (or your) vomit cold, than pay for Sky...

Like Sony too. Checkout ebay.. not private sellers but the shop sellers. Some great deals last time I looked.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking Sony - it's what I would buy if I had the money... Although maybe I'd want B&O stuff....

I've had a Sony 25" TV for about 14 years. It had an audio gremlin a few years ago (£25 to fix) but other than that it's brilliant, super sound and I'm still very pleased with it And being nice 4:3 ratio the picture looks good: no squashing or cropping

DON'T DO IT!!!!!!!!!!
My £500 SONY broke after a year and i'm still in a battle to get it fixed! Using the pikey thing i bought 15 years ago at the moment and apart from the screen size and sound there is NO difference!
All this new fangled stuff isn't worth the paper it's written on imho as the naked eye will not be able to distinquish any difference in picture quality.
Trust me - get a mediocre set and a bloody good sound system with the change.
Reminds me of those jeans with the wavy line on the back that go for hundreds and yet they are made from the the same denim as a pair of £4 Tesco jobbies with a tuppence piece of cloth sewn on. " there you go sir that'll be £500"!!!!!
Alternatively, wait for the sales and new line to come out when you will probably pay half price.
just my 2p and yes i am bitter.

Just for balance, our 29 year old Sony finally packed in a while back, replaced with a 21" sony somethingorother and it's great.

My 10 year olf 25" sony is still fine , as is my 32" widescreen after 5 years.

At the time the sony had a better picture than all the competition, tho not perfect (slight ghosting on strong reds and a bit of geometry problems).

Its decent kit but the competition is just as good. IMO 28£ is to small for a WS, 32" is munimal even if your sat on top of it.

Look at Sony's KD-32DX51, a straight-forward, 50Hz FreeView equipped 32" widescreen.

The picture quality is subjectively bang on, undoubtedly crisper with better colour fidelity and general contrast impact than any of the alternative, premium brand alternatives and you can get it for well under six hundred sovs.

Decent looking set, too.

It's not just the picture quality that I like about Sony, it's the OS/firmware behind it - an important feature often overlooked in the shop. Same reason I like Nokia phones - love the firmware.

Sony have 'Smart' size which rather than stretch and 4:3 picture to fit the screen, they crop the top slightly, leave 75% of the picture undistorted, and stretch the outer portion of the pictures to fit - makes a much better job of the fat people syndrome. BUT honestly, I don't use this feature. My Sony 32" widescreen 'Arte Couture' is set up that 16:9 braodcasts are shown in widescreen as intended, 4:3 switch to 14:9 (which is 4:3 cropped top and bottom) - this reduces the black bands at the edges. This way I never have the fattened look. Go beyond the looks and quality.

I also have a Dell 17" LCD in the bedroom which does not have the features above. I am constantly switching between fat view and 4:3 - damn annoying...

I use 14:9 too.

Smart switching was totaly mad and I cant stand thing s squashed or stretched.
