I'm surprised that was still going on by the time the Impreza was around. The widely-available clip of Walter Rohrl driving a quattro shows the crowds parting as he approaches though. Scary stuff.

There was a programme on recently about the history of rallying including Walter Rohrl's incident and it was said that the Portugese fans used to try and touch the cars as they went through the stages as some sort of macho thing.

IIRC they even interviewed some of the people who had been involved.

The footage of the Group B stuff is frightening: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eYIH7ApCxoM

Seeing Walters feet dance on the pedals reminds me of watching some similar footage years ago and my Sister in law looking on horrified, pointing and saying "He's doing it all wrong!"

As scary as it looks, they must have left some margin more than if the stage was empty.

Otherwise they would be psychopath..

I seem to remember one of the drivers in a documentary saying the only way to drive was to act as if they were not there.

Maybe an urban myth but there is a story of a team discovering a finger stuck in a gap on the car after a stage.
