I just came across this photograph of Kings Cross, taken in 1899 and noticed the news stand. The 'Execution - Ansell' refers to the hanging of Mary Ansell (Wikipedia informs me) at St Albans. She was either 18 or 22 (reports vary) and a housemaid, found guilty of murdering her sister by poison. She was the youngest woman to be hanged in the modern era. Her sister was an inmate in an asylum and it seems Mary Ansell was of limited mental capacity herself. Newspapers questioned the sentence, and 100 MPs signed a petition to the Home Office. The Minister was unmoved.

"King's cross station in 1899, note the 'lighthouse' tower on building in the distance. This was a lookout for omnibuses so that signals could be given to let passengers know their road transport was arriving."
