Then gave less contrast in the low tones, more in the high

How did you do that? i.e. change contrast just for a set of tones?

Excellent pictures as usuall Martin.
Such lovely colours and it looks to me as if you did a blummin good job of exposure in sunlight. I know mine would be overexposed
I really like the first picture. The blue, the uneven path and that wall at the top left looks like it's been threatening to topple for years.
Also the little one brings real life to the picture demonstrating how such an old walkway is used daily.
I can invisage a old wrinkly sitting just inside that keyhole door and smells of local cuisine wafting out to the alley.
Morrocco looks lovely; I hope you had a wonderfull time.

Sorry - just had to have a play with the first one - the colours are fantastic although it's a bit washed out...
I've lost the detail in the end building at the top, but can't seem to find it in the image posted.
Not sure if it really *was* that blue, but I'm in a playing mood today with pictures!

Madeira fireworks. They make any others look like a £10 bargin box bought at the corner shop (like Ken uses in London).
Need some playing with but I've just got off the plane so I need some sleep.
To get an idea of scale you can see a large cruse ship in the second shot...
Happy New Year!

I was in Madeira for the turn of New Year in 2001. You're right, the firework displays there are truly awesome
To be fair to this years display in London, that too was pretty spectacular (particularly the last 2-3 mins).
Nice photo!
We thought the London show was good this year too! One of the best I've seen for years.

I've seen shots of it now and it did look quite good. Still, it's the scale of the Funchal ones that is stunning. 20+ launch sites each being up to 0.5KM apart, all perfectly in time.

Could you imagine the red tape a display like that would need in Mr Livingstones organisation?
Liability!! Public Safety!! Crowd Control!! Road Closures!! Westminster Council!! Southwark Council!! Met Police!! City Police!! Lambeth Council!! River Authorities!!
The list goes on and on ...... OK, half-a-mile of the south bank, half-a-mile of the embankment, one road bridge and a foot bridge all closed for a few hours will do ta very much.
