Why, having resized to the same size are they coming up like this? (Hosted on Photobucket) I have noticed this has happened before. I have checked and I HAVE made them the same size.

Lovely pictures paul.
No. 2 especially - great mood.
There seems to be so much detail you could have had in several areas there, sand, kite, clouds, etc and a slight shame to get so little of each. Maybe there is no anchor or focal point for the picture. getting slightly lower and getting some detail in the foreground may have helped.
Not sure but a polorizing filter may have improved the colours and given more gold to the sun on the sand.

Still lovely pictures though.
Ps. just trying to post what i think would be helpfull

Any use?

(sorry about the artefacts round the kite; they appeared when I went b/w))

Thanks Ian. I was aware that I was not getting a focal point anywhere. I tried landscape, but they have even less! I KNEW I should have taken my 80-200 lens It would have helped pull the shot closer.

(Lesson learnt? Take all you kit, even for a stroll along the beach.)

I think you are right about getting closer
But i still think it's a lovely picture and you saw it!
What is it that gets us so when we can't reproduce the beauty that we see?
It's a curse i tell you

Yeap, would agree, just moving closer in on the subject might have improved them a little, as the foreground currently doesnt add anything to the picture. Id also stick them through photoshop just to enhance some of the colours, or as suggested try a filter. I wonder if there was any chance of getting the people and a reflection of the kite in the water in one photo? Looks an awful lot like West Wittering, anywhere nearby?

You're falling between two stools. If you want a colour photo of someone flying a kite, you need to get the subjects much bigger as has been stated. However, in the wide-angle shot given, the whole concept of the shot is different. I like it: I like the potential bleakness and drama of the wide angle view which is why to my mind it works in b/w but not in colour. I also like the wacky composition which, like a lot of good photos, breaks the rules but works because of it.
Just take a step back and you'll see you have a winner there. But only in b/w!!

I'm not sure getting closer would work - you'd have the sun in the background unless you crabbed around to the side, at which point you may have lost the sea.

If anything, the colours need to be slightly stronger, but its still a nice shot. I don't like the 2nd one, the sun is too distracting.

I like the top one, but would cropping out some of the foreground, or even just artifically bluring it to give a depth-of-field effect might work well.

The bottom one could have done with the sun up higher IMHO, and looking up a bit more.

You could also have set spot meter mode for the exposure and got a good "star" to the sun. This is what I did in this picture - putting it into spot mode, and then exposing at the point about 1" to the right of the sun, thereby forcing the camera to increase the sutter speed compared to it's normal metering mode.

[Post processing colour correction and contrast tweaks done as well]

Getting that sort of effect as a backdrop, high left, could have added some great balance.

I do like both of them though - well done!

Two more variations on the theme

This one I added a "fake" sunset to it, and pulled the contrast of the kite forward. To me it almost looks like it's now floating out of the picture. Perhaps this just looks a little too unbelieveable?

This has just subtle colour correct to get it a bit less "blue" cast to the picture (the blue from the sea and sky reflects off the sand, thereby making it a bit too "blue", so I removed that), and then blurred the front as I suggested. I'd probably say that this one looks too "photoshopped" now though.

Just personal taste as to which ones are "better", but it should give you some ideas!

Cheers Joust - and all the other comments. I have not yet explored the world of Photoshop, or any other for that matter. All my shots are as they left the camera except the odd crop or re-sizing. I think a I should maybe venture in and have a play Nothing to loose.
