Hi Guys

First post on this forum but post a lot over on the Porsche forum.

I have a Sigma SD9 and lots of EX lenses and I am gradually getting into photography.

I have been using XP but I am now thinking maybe a Mac would be better. Are Macs lots better for doing photo work????

Cheers Sean

No doubt about it, YES!

What's your budget, and which computer were you looking at?

Walk into any decent art and design office and the vast majority will be on macs.

For audio, visual and photo editing i really think the macs have it by a country mile.

Get a tonne of ram though!

I'm happy to let you have a go on my Powerbook whenever you want mate Just gimme a call/email.

someone will post a more detailed explanation of pros/cons soon i'm sure

I was going to buy a notebook. Want a leightweight one to carry around. I have a large XP notebook which is to heavy to carry around all the time...

Budget doesn;t really matter, as long as it has all the bits.

You'll want a powerbook for digital work. 15in is what i've got... its a nice compromise. Big enough to use easily, but small enough to fit in a bag. Weighs hardly anything too

Spec the ram up and HDDs up though

Texting you now.

If you are using Photoshop/Canon DPP etc for adjustments why would the Mac be better for image editing?

Is the Mac version of Photoshop different?

Or is it because the stereotypical 'arty' types prefer to dress a bit different from the norm..?

Apple's processors work in a much more efficient way to Windows. This allows you to process more data easily and effectively.

To get performance comparable to a Powerbook you'd need a top spec'd Inspiron which weighs a freaking tonne.

Then you've got OS-X... anyone who claims XP is more reliable must be on the moon. I'm yet to come across someone who has used OS-X and not realised its far superior to XP.

Photoshop etc are the same fundamentally... but there is a more specialist market in the mac world so Photoshop etc works better on the mac platforms as they're originally designed for macs.

It's got nothing to do with how macs look like, they're just a serious alternative to windows... and in the case of photo editing they're superior. Thats why all the art and design studios use them

If you don't need a laptop and have a screen at home to use, the Mac Mini would be a comparable performer, but costs a lot less.

If you have a decent screen and keyboard/mouse already, it might be a good intro into the world of Macs without too significant an outlay (relatively speaking!).

That said, the 15" Powerbook is a brute of a machine. It'll easily handle what you want to do on it.

Do you have any sample shots from the SD9? You're the first person I "know" who has one...

I've been using Macs non stop since 1983 and PC's since 1988.

IMHO - Macs are better. (With the one exception that when they DO crash is's often a lot more serious than PC's - which make a habit of it).

Something to bear in mind... similar software for the PC is much cheaper (and does the same job - if slightly slower) and about 90% of the world uses a PC - so will think you are from Mars if you mention OSX.

You pay's ya money and takes ya' choice.

I have a 4-year old Athlon 1800+ running XP and it handles my photos just fine using PhotoShop CS. It does have 0.5Gb RAM though.

Depends how much money you want to spend: my PC must be worth all of £150 now!

Just to add... As Mr Simpo - I also use PC for all Video and photos. I use the Mac for music - where it is MILES ahead of the PC (it's a resolution thing)

I currently use a high end Tosh Laptop, with 1GB ram etc, and by the sounds of things the Mac may be quicker but not necessarily better. The only problem with my laptop is it's heavy. With my laptop, DSLR and lenses the bax weighs in at 13kg. Maybe I should just leave the 170-500 at home, rarely use it.

The SD9 is a good camera, just takes an age to process the X3F raw files. I have some sample shots but I am sure the cameras ability is a lot greater than mine....
