Wait till November and you'll probably find loads on the market :P
I've found the DJI software to be particularly picky about which phones / tablets it wants to work with. Budget £50 for something like an Acer iconia tablet if you don't already have one. The UI is quite fiddly on a smartphone and you don't want to lose control over your drone should someone decide to call you.
I paid £585 for a mavic pro with fly more combo pack last year, I expect the price may well have dropped a bit more since then. Budget for a tablet, tablet holder, hard carry case and another spare battery if you can. Battery care is particularly important because if you don't condition the batteries correctly it's all too easy to ruin them and you're then looking at £60 for another second hand battery.
Good points about running the Mavic off a smartphone, I have a Pixel 2 XL and it's still fiddly and hard to frame shots.I've found the DJI software to be particularly picky about which phones / tablets it wants to work with. I haven't moved to a tablet as I've seen various reports that the GPS lock and return to home functions don't work with them (due to no GPS on them and no data connection)
How do you get on with that?

I have GPS on my Acer Iconia one 7 so this isn't an issue for me. If I want a data connection I can always hotspot my mobile and use it that way but I've never needed to do that out in the field unless I wanted to use the maps feature to plot a course.I haven't moved to a tablet as I've seen various reports that the GPS lock and return to home functions don't work with them (due to no GPS on them and no data connection)

GPS Lock and return to home for the mavic should be performed by the Mavic equipment, not your phone?

It was this article that put me off going to a tablet

Sounds like you aren't getting any of those issues?

Follow Me mode - I don't use this mode as I normally use activetrack instead, but my tablet has GPS so shouldn't be an issue. It was this article that put me off going to a tablet

Resetting home location - Not sure this is still a problem? I've been out in a field before and asked the drone to return home back to its takeoff spot which it has done so. It should normally set its home location from when it takes off.
Maps don’t work - This is true, but I'm flying by line of sight anyway. If there was a need for it, I'd turn on the hotspot on my phone and connect the tablet to it.

I feel my wifes Tab S2 getting "borrowed" this weekend

Slightly off topic, but one of the reasons I bought the Pro 4 was because it has a built in display, which overcomes all of the problems (which I also had). I'd never do a third party display again. Too many issues for an easy life (which I really want!)
I bought the (expensive if bought separately) DJI Smart Controller for the Magic Pro 2 as I was fed up with all the faff of using a smart phone with the original controller. It works a treat and is so much more convenient. Regarding drone registration:
Got me' driving ticket yesterday.
£9 wasted I'm sure. (Like it's going to stop drones flying over prisons!).
IMHO it's a poor test as:
1/ you can just read the answers on another page
2/ at least one of the multiple answer questions has two correct answers
3/ pretty much nobody that does this test will be a crim, just a bloke with a drone that will now need to pay money to HM Gov each year.
My first pic as a number!

At least it forces people to read the legislation and hopefully educate them?1/ you can just read the answers on another page

Great. Then you'll know which one :O)
I've not seen all the questions, just a few that have been posted on a forum. Curious to know why one question would have two answers though. There's been some confusion over the question related to using a drone near a crowd of 1,000 people. Some didn't realise you could reduce separation distance to 30m on take off/landing.Edited by GetCarter on Wednesday 6th November 19:27
