Anyone here got/getting a D5 or D500?
Discussion
D500 to hand here - dropped lucky on one at Bristol cameras last week so they are trickling through (finally). Not really had chance to have a proper play yet - took it for a walk across the local fields on Fri evening as the light was great but didn't see a single thing worth pointing the camera at. However, first impressions are it's a very impressive build. Feels solid and substantial with some cracking touches (love the separate viewfinder shutter).
Been waiting for this body for literally years.
Anyone know if the MB-D17 battery grip adds a further battery in addition to the in-camera one? I ask as the grip I use on its D200 predecessor has two batteries in the grip but the MB-D17 apparently only has provision for one.... can't see much point in that?

Indeed. Whoever decided to kill off the Dxx range has obviously left the company!
Quite a debacle really - all that will they/won't they; have they/haven't they fannying around must have disengaged many with collections of expensive DX specific glass - lost count of the times I nearly bit the bullet on an FX body that was not what I really wanted as an alternative to going for a long-in-the-tooth/imminently obsolete 300S. For the sake of Nikon's credibility, the D5 and D500 better be classics!
Mine has the usual made in Thailand mark but, apparently, the recent Japanese earthquake is now the reason for slow supply - was very surprised indeed when the Bristol Cameras website indicated they had stock and more surprised still that they were perfectly happy to split a just received body/16-80 kit to let me have the body only. Great service from an obliging outfit and well worth the drive to collect

It will retain the original camera battery in the body with an additional one added in the battery grip so you get two. All the latest Nikon battery grips are of that design. Makes it a bit of a pain to recharge the body one as you have to remove the grip but you should be able to specify in the menus which battery it will use up first, it's not always that successful though. Thanks, the charging palaver was puzzling me too - shame they don't support trickle charging when the camera is connected to a PC or some other device.
So, having now had a couple of attempts to go out and take some wildlife photos (a no-brainer around here normally), I have concluded Nikon have added a critter repellent feature as standard - every bird and mammal I have so much as tried to aim a lens at has legged it PDQ. Heard, got close to, then saw a Green Woodpecker... lifted camera, gone. Various Red Kites... same. A sooty squirrel (local darker coated mutation of the grey)... bye
Even the house cat turned her back on me

One of our cats won't let me take photos of him any more. Didn't understand why initially, but it turned out to be the focus assist light spooking him. Doesn't matter if I disable it as he's decided he doesn't want to be a model anyway. So, having now had a couple of attempts to go out and take some wildlife photos (a no-brainer around here normally), I have concluded Nikon have added a critter repellent feature as standard - every bird and mammal I have so much as tried to aim a lens at has legged it PDQ. Try Clifton Cameras in Dursley - I picked up a battery grip for mine from there yesterday of which they had several so might have just had a delivery...
Might even get to try it properly in the next few days
I tried them but like everyone else, they are still trying to clear pre-orders. Might even get to try it properly in the next few days
