Why are my air show pictures crap?

I'm using a Canon 1200d with the boggo 70 - 300 lens. I think the shutter was as quick as I could manage with the aperture wide open and the ISO as low as possible.

Am I doing it wrong, or am I just asking too much from the lens?

Edit.

I've just found this one and it's maybe approaching the bottom of the ladder of the standard here, so it can't be the camera / lens.

I'm no expert, but in my experience....

1. Most lenses (and more so cheaper ones) don't like being at the extremes of their aperture ranges, so whilst you do want a wide depth of field, try dropping it back a few stops to get a better compromise between depth of field and sharpness. This will also obviously let more light in. smile

2. Practice your panning skills! smile You don't really need all that quick a shutter speed if you've matched your panning to the speed of the aircraft, as they don't have much in the way of moving parts on them to blur, and if it's got propellers, they usually look better blurred anyway.

3. Take hundreds of shots! smile The joy of digital means that whilst you've still got to schlep through them all to pick out the gems from the dross, at least it doesn't cost you anything. This applies even more to birds than it does to planes. I took 600+ shots at a red kite feeding centre a couple of years ago, all to end up with three shots I was really, really happy with.

4. Having said all that, mine are nothing like as good as the vast majority on here, but you should remember that many more people than you and I will look at the excellent photos posted on here and quietly back away from the "Submit" button with their own photos, so don't beat yourself up about it too much! hehe

Anyway, a few of my own from RIAT 2016...

Possibly the only people for whom you actually want a grey background!

Not sure if this is the Greek airforce display team, or just the Greek airforce full stop! hehe

65 years of design progress...

Awaits flaming for over-doing the HDR, but it was deliberate, and I rather like it! biggrin

Awesome pictures here!

These are two of mine from Wings and Wheels '14. I need to get to more airshows! I did take more, but for some reason I haven't put them up on my Flickr, will have to dig out that file now..

Also, don't be afraid to crop shots if you're not already.

Already cropped massively. This was about as close as they got to us.

Thank you very much.
I only really use Flickr for back up cloud storage.

Still using an entry level camera (canon 100d) so really interested to see what the difference could have been with high end equipment. Although I guess expensive gear really shows itself in less than perfect conditions?

Just went to mooch through your aircraft shots and got a lot of family. I have all mine as private. Not sure if you knew.

Great shots of the shows though.

Just in case anyone is interested/bored/has the time off, and lives near Wattisham in Suffolk....

We have a 'families day' this Thursday, and the flying part will consist of a Tornado, F-15, Red Arrows and the Falcons.
You'll have to watch from outside the wire, and no I can't get you in!

There'll also be a Boeing Osprey flying in, but it'll only be a static display.

Flying starts at about 1pm.

(I'll be working... cough......)
