I need a camera for quick snaps - and some professional work for my web design & sports car photography.

Is this any good? Seems a good price?

All comments appreciated.

Hi Jo. That seems a very good price and I've no doubt it's excellent value. If you think that's all you'll ever need, grab it. But with an eye on possible future needs, and if you have a litle more £ in the pot, have you considered a DSLR?

(professionalism forbids me from recommending any but there's a certain big Owner's Clud here )

As someone who is NOT a member of the "Clud", I will rather surprisingly also endorse this as damn fine, competent camera.

Wow, I did that without mentioning the Canon Pro1, Canon G6 or Canon S70 - cool huh?

My housemate used one for a while and I have extensive experience with one.

If you intend to get creative (metering/focus/shutter/aperture etc.) then don't bother. The menu system is a paint in the butt to use for creative photography and you'll be MUCH better off with a dSLR.

If you want something just for snapshots then the camera is quite good - very crisp super sharp images in focus from here to infinity. The metering system is very good and the lens is also quite impressive. The shots do come out looking a bit "artificial" for my own tastes (read: over-sharpened), but this is minor.

You said you want to do motoring photography - I hope you don't intend to use it to capture images of a fast car moving, do you? If you do I think you best look elsewhere - the shutter lag is tremendous!

All in all, a good camera, but for that kind of money I would SERIOUSLY recommend spending a bit more and getting a dSLR. You may think that you might not need one, but trust me, if you intend to get creative at ALL, it's only a matter of time and you may as well cut your losses and get one now.
