Hand luggage and tripods

Anybody had experiences with packing a small tripod and or monopod in had luggage?
My tripod will fit into the 22x14x9 standard carry on,which i will be using on all of the flights along with a lowpro trekker fro the camera kit ( the size seems to be within what they would call a small handbag/laptop case).
I want to keep the hanging around carousels to a minimum
I am using several different airlines in the US Southwest/Frontier/United/Delta/Air Canada/American as BA to/from her

Just be aware, some airlines will not allow a tripod attached to hand luggage. I personally haven't had an issues but know of two others who were forced to check it in the hold.
