Im after a digital video cam to use mainly for recording decent drives/ trackdays/ sprints etc etc... I wish to record and edit videos and such to share amongst mates/ PH'ers. Im not particularily technically minded, but would like to be able to edit videos to include music etc etc Is it reasonable to assume I can get something decent for under £300?? I havent got a clue about these things - anyone know of anything that'll meet my requirements? Thanks in advance, Ben CA

Mine arrived yesterday. Canon MV 830i

Around £290. I bought it for similar reasons to you. Make sure you get one with analogue input - so you can attach a bullet cam, if need be. The 'i' on the Canon range signifies this.

i got my camera last summer mainly to record track days and Vmax events.

i got the panasonic NV GS11.
it is great cos it is V easy to use and has a 24X optical zoom which means that if you are spectating track days etc then you can get really clear shots from a long way away.

you generally buy the editing software separate from the camera. i got a basic package from pinnacle called studio 9. it is really easy to make decent vids and you can add music etc.

check out my vid at pistonheads.tv called RUF CTR vs RUF RGT2. that was taken with that camera and edited with pinnacle software. (please note that the actaul video is much better quality, i have just made it worse so that it is not massive!)

hope this has helped

As you know i run a Canon MV650i, which seems to do the job really well, also works really well with my bullet cam. I would highly recommend anyone to buy one! you should be able to get a really good cam for around the £300 mark.

mine set me back just under £150 but included a few extra mounts, glass, and the cigarette lighter power supply. I ordered a package through RF Concepts which came with mic etc.

i have survived quite well without a bullet cam. for Vmax i use the camera as a handheld and after a bit of practice you can get fairly smooth vids.

ofcourse for track days you cant do handheld, but a basic £10 roll bar/headrest clamp from jessops online works well with most cameras.

this may come up twice later as i have already posted a reply, but it didnt appear.

i have survived quite well without a bullet cam. for events you can get good videos using the camera normally as a hand held.
of course for track days you are not normally allowed to do this, but a £10 roll bar/headrest clamp works well for most cameras.

a benefit of a bullet cam is the ability to quickly move the view by just taping it somewhere else on the car.
but i personally would get a camera first and try it out with a basic £10 clamp and then if you really want a bullet cam then get it later.

hope this helps

If you're lucky enough to get an end of line camcorder, then it might be possible. the only other option would be a new camcorder, and decent mount. Kelkoo is a great place to shop around to get the best price.

If you look on ebay there is a canon factory outlet . You should be able to get an MV700i for about £160'ish inc vat + del.

Looking a bit low on stock at the moment though - but worth checking every couple of days.

Hope this helps

How did you get on with this?

I'm looking at getting something similar, around the 300ukp mark, analogue in, no fancy editing stuff (do it on the PC!), miniDV, decent optical zoom, best optics & CCD I can get.

Have been toying with Canon xxx-i range as well.

Thoughts?

seriously check out the panasonic NV-GS range.

awesome, easy to use camera, amazing optical zoom (mine is 24x, and it is an old model now!) good battery life (easily long enough to fill a standard mini dv tape).
and they generally come in at about £300.
