I have a 10d that I only use indoors, on a tripod, for small product photos. I use a relatively cheap zoom lens (I forget which, but from memory, it's a slow EF, something like 35-80mm, f4 or so). After looking at the results from some of the nicer modern Fujis, I think my 10d results are a little soft. And sometimes, I'd like to go closer for detail than the zoom allows.

Being in Japan at the moment, I can scour the used shops in Tokyo for nice fast lenses for the 10d, or - if the experts here think that the 10d's 6MP sensor is a limiting factor, I can perhaps look for a replacement camera.

Thoughts?

My view is that if the current photos are good enough at 6mp, stick with the 10D for now. Buy a 60 or 100mm macro lens while in Japan if you can. You’ll be surprised at the results.

Then, if you want, upgrade the body at a later date. A used body can be had very cheaply, but good glass keeps its value.

Whether 6Mp is limiting or not is for you to decide not us. Unless you want to blow your product photos up to A3+ it's fine. ISO will be limited but that's not an issue here. And if you want to go closer, buy a macro lens. They're f2.8 so will be faster than your current lens, and with superb image quality.

If you're happy with everything else you can stay with the 10D.

Thanks for the advice. I'll see if I can find the 100mm macro lens here. The L-series goes for big money and doesn't seem to provide me with much extra benefit.

Not sure if the same is true of USM, but it doesn't look to cost much more than the original non-USM version and would be easier to sell on if I did decide to go to another system.

Huge fan of the EOS Canon 10d 'classic' - still have mine in my bag (sits along side my 60d + 7D)

Ergonomically its a great thing to handle and very well built esp with vertical grip.

Cant say I use it alot due to infuriating write speed now, but, if patient it is still a good workhorse that can take a battering...until the shutter dies, this will be a sad day when that happens.

It was my main rig when i went on holiday to Cyprus last year, and didn't want to risk a more pricey body, 6MP is still good enough with good glass.

Not worth selling it as they are worthless really, means more to me sentimentally now.

Few shots I took with it...
