Hi All - Happy New Year... it's showing off time again! biggrin

Reading back on what Rob said in last year's thread I could repeat almost verbatim as regards my 2018 photography - 'lost a personal thread somewhere. Not felt too compelled to get out and shoot, lacking inspiration, but really enjoyed the times I managed to. Choosing a top 5 shouldnt be hard from such a limited list!'

My 5 are below - what have you got? smile

(previous "Your Top 5 From..." threads: 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011, 2010)

In chronological order...

1. Got a few Kingfishers last year but was chuffed to get one with a fish smile

Kingfisher by Mike Smith, on Flickr

2. Had a trip to the Trossachs with Mrs DD for our anniversary - lucky with the weather!

Loch Voil by Mike Smith, on Flickr

3. Torridon (aka heaven)

The Liathach and Beinn Alligin (Explored) by Mike Smith, on Flickr

4. Dragonfly - spent a lot of time looking for one of these! Liked the way this fitted into the focus plane wingtip to wingtip

Common Darter (1) by Mike Smith, on Flickr

5. Well there had to be a bride in there somewhere! My favorite bit of this is the tiny reflection of the moon you can just make out smile

Nice start Mike

I've also struggled to get out with the camera as much as I'd have liked due to various reasons.

Fortunately I had a number of unusual visitors to my garden helping me keep my macro habit satisfied, probably due to the countryside around being burnt to a crisp .

Here's a few I did get.

Happy New Year to all and here's hoping for more togging in 2019

Is this a recurring theme for 2018? - I really didn't get out with the camera as much as I wanted to, must try harder in 2019

In chronological order....

March - a 9-hour round-trip to Tenby in South Wales to see the first proper snow there in decades

St Catherine's Island from Paragon Gardens by Nigel Ogram, on Flickr

May - my son and I chartered a helicopter for a flight along the Thames...

Cityscape by Nigel Ogram, on Flickr

...followed the same day by a visit to Dungeness

Off the rails by Nigel Ogram, on Flickr

June - the annual pilgrimage to La Sarthe, where the "TVR" fell apart on the first corner...

The front fell off..... by Nigel Ogram, on Flickr

And finally, a huge gap to December, and a day out to London

I'll bite smile

I've been a member of Trey Ratcliff's Arcanum for nearly 3 years now. Sadly, there doesn't seem to be much focus on running this business these days. However the cohort I'm a member of has been a very supportive and constructive community which is likely to survive beyond the Arcanum. I feel I've pushed myself further down the fine art path in 2018. In no particular order, my favourite five this year

A dawn shot from Richmond Hill across the Thames. The serendipitous paddleboarder made my shot

An exercise in recreating a sunset glow, which came out remarkably well. Somewhere in the woods near Whistler in Canada

Pre dawn twilight on Lost Lake, Canada. The ripples were photographer intervention smile

Sailboat battening down the hatches in front of a summer storm in the Bay of Messinia, Greece

My submission to the Taylor Wessing photographic portrait competition - this is the only copy I have with me travelling at the mo, so ignore the irritating line at bottom left

That really sums up the Members Meeting last year - my God it was cold!

Some of the shots on here are seriously stunning. I got my first camera in December, so although I don't dream of having the quality shown so far, I would love to get some shots for 2019 that I am happy with.
Keep the pictures coming, I love seeing people's work.

Aw, thanks so much! It does beg the question whether I start setting up that kind of action shot, instead of hoping something will happen.

Many excellent photos in this thread - some really talented photographers.

Like some others, I've not got out with the camera enough, but have enjoyed it when I did.

inspiring stuff from everyone!

So my own groove still isnt really back , so much so I totally missed starting this thread, cheers DD! I have been out shooting this year but not near as much as I should, still lacking motivation for a few reasons and distracted by other things. I've bought an astounding $0 worth of gear this year which is an achievement in itself! Oddly the workshops have been doing OK though!

So top 5, lets see if we can do in chronological order too..

First shot from March from my most abused local spot a short walk from home on the port hills, overlooking Lyttelton.

cut loose.. by Rob Dickinson, on Flickr

Then April I got out at night to lake Ellesmere and a little lucky with some Aurora.
Geostorm by Rob Dickinson, on Flickr

A birthday trip down south to Te Anau in June and I found a very frequently shot Jetty to abuse further.
Te Anau by Rob Dickinson, on Flickr

September we had a yacht beach locally and shot the absolute st out of it, I ended up with a few I was happy with.
Tempus fugit by Rob Dickinson, on Flickr

And got out for yet another astro session towards the end of the year up to Castle hill/porters pass, ended up with this as my fav, probably end upo selling the mx5 this year as it just doesnt get used enough.
