very very very irritated!!!!

I am trying to sell my dad's old 1D so I put it on ebay this morning, the listing is here

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7516508176&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMESO%3AIT&rd=1

I've just got back from the gym to find that someone has bought it using Buy It Now. Great! And look at the email I have from them

Hello seller,
I am Amanda Cole,I took interest in your item and I will like to purchase it for my daughter in nigeria as a Birthday gift. Due to the status of my job I do travel alot and I won't be at home to receive the good. So if you can do me the favour of sending the item directly to my daughter.Calculate the total cost including shipping via fedex or DHL 2-3 days and send it to me.I will be paying you through western union postage money order . Send me your name and address(residencial) and the total cost of everything. Thanks.
Here is my daughter's address
Fola Cole
#41 thomas salako street ogba
Ifako ijaye
Lagos
23401
Nigeria

So do I now have to pay all my listing fees even though this is blatantly fraudelent? Can I reject the bid since I specifically stated payment by Paypal or credit card?

Damn, stick a fish-hook through the ice and look what you catch. Zero feedback, registered today and from Nigeria!!

Actually, I'd go along with it. Send them an invoice as you normally would and wait for payment. It's OK to ACCEPT funds by Western Union (you go to a travel agent and collect the cash) but not to PAY that way.

When, as seems likely, they don't pay, you open a dispute with eBay claiming them as non-paying bidder (NPB) and if they don't respond after a certain time, you close the dispute and eBay will refund your fees (Listing + FVF).

Presumably you have the buyer's address? It's sure to be a dud. eBay hates that; they'll soon be thrown off.

hmm thanks for the advice both of you. I have emailed ebay and await their response. I'm away tomorrow so I will see what is happening on Wednesday and go from there.

I'd seriously consider only allowing pre-approved bidders only next time I sell anything on eBay. (Where they have to email you and you approve them before they are allowed to bid.) I sold a phone on there a while back and there were in the region of 5 Nigerian bids a day all being deleted by eBay but in the end one of them won it. Not to mention the 10 emails a day I was getting from them! Fortunately I used the second chance offer thing and the second highest bidder took it.

i dont know why ebay just dont ip block nigeria and be done with it. just write off the whole wretched nation.

i checked back some of our logs a few months ago for a 419 spammer and sure enough, every single account i checked i could trace back to a number of locations in nigeria.

we then cross referenced all ip blocks that are used in nigeria with email account creation ips, and deleted several thousand would be spammers in a single sql command. not a single address we deleted was valid.

Is there any way you can set up a system to block/delete mails from specific countries?

Don't think it would be easy to block a specific country, there are spam blockers that will only allow mail from a recognised friends list to pass through, would that help ? A techie friend of mine uses McAfee Internet Security Suite with Spamkiller.

I think I have a legit buyer, I have told him he can pay by bank transfer. is there any reason not to give someone my account number and sort code? Have a look on the auction if you want, he is the one who has bid already, his feedback looks genuine.

It wasn't specifically for me: I use Mailwasher. Just thought that if you could block a whole country, that would be a good start!

No, but if you're concerned phone your bank to check. Also ask if there's any way the deal can be 'pulled', like a bouncing cheque. I don't think it can.
However, they will still ask for three days for funds to clear. Funny how banks can do their own transactions in an instant, but use pony and cart for yours!

this guy

keeps on asking me questions. call me overly supsicious, but why would someone buy 26 cheap handbags then a 1D?

Almost had a proper cash buyer for it today but he pulled out last minute because he had emergency work that needed doing

I'll play devil's advocate here...

The bloke seems to have been a member since 2002, and has little feedback. That probably would have been OK in 02, but now most of us won't trade with people with less than 5-10 feedback.

Hence he's bought a load of cheap tat in the hope of being taken a little more seriously...

That's my thought - still doesn't mean I'd trust him though...

Jumping from handbags/girlie stuff to a desirable camera is a bit suspicious. Your call. How intelligent are his questions?
