You can never be too suspisious but...take me. I've been on e-bay since 2003, I've never bought anything, never sold anything, only got a paypal account last week. Does that mean I'm never going to be allowed to buy anything? I'm not a con-man, if I eventually bid for an item it's because I want something, and I have the money to pat for it. Am I going to be black-balled for not having history?

Good advice is just buy 4 or 5 small things. The feedback you get from those sellers will mean that if/when you go for something big then you have more chance.
The alternative is to contact the seller through the contact page and show your "provenance".

I've sold stuff successfully to 0 and 1 feedback people - everyone starts at the beginning. However there is a small risk they are simply late-night drunk muppets having a laugh. Depends what you're selling - as DCW has discovered, if you're selling a hi-tech highly desirable item (laptops are another example) you do attract the scammers more. A second-hand lawnmower, not so!
It's quite amusing to see newbies slogging it out over the full course of an auction, pushing the price up and up. Innocent until proven guilty I'd say, though sometimes you have to explain about feedback and how to leave it. Expect a bit more work to complete a deal with a newbie, but like I say, you have to start somewhere.

Martin, just sound like an honest bloke and people won't really care how much feedback you have. If you are a serious bidder then supply them with a contact phone number (I'm guessing you have a UK mobile number that you can use whilst in Spain) or even give them a call to confirm things.
At the end of the day, i'd probably trust anyone with a good understanding of the English language on eBay!
