I'm looking at getting my first SLR camera, can anyone recommend one for under £400?

Just for a body, a second hand Canon 70d. I had a 30d before this and had the same money to spend, the 70d is fantastic.

Would you be ok with used? If not, it’s quite a narrow choice.
What sort of photography will it be for?

I’d start with a Canon 450d off eBay, £180 will get you a decent one with the kit lens (18-55=28-80) and a couple of batteries. Save the rest for another lens when you’ve worked with out how to use the camera, and know what you want to do with it.

You really need to handle some tbh.

The Canon feels very different in your hand to the Nikon, and can be very small depending on model.

You also need to decide which system offers the best flexibility for glass to.

Worth considering mirrorless options as well, it is largely how the DSLR market is moving at the moment.

I'm a big fan of the M43 system that Olympus and Panasonic use, but have recently 'upgraded' to Sony and gone full frame (35mm equiv)

Does £400 need to cover lens or lenses too?

Brand wise, nobody has made a bad camera for a long time now so they'll all do a great job. Probably better to base decision on how you get on with the ergonomics and interface or what your friends use.

If £400 is to cover lenses too, you'd probably be best buying used and maybe split budget 50/50 between lenses and body.

Remember to budget for cards, spare battery etc...
