I'm impressed you know such stuff. Kurosawa or the original book?I'm a big fan of Kurosawa. His range was comprehensive. From social commentary on modern Japanese family life to sprawling Samurai epics.
However, for me, Derzu Usala is nigh on perfect film making. It quietly encapsulates the desolation of times lost. A man living a simple, harmonious life becomes adrift in a rapidly changing world. A man who, by coming into contact with modernity is diminished and then destroyed by it.
A beautiful, thought provoking piece from a cinematic master.

The film had a troublesome production since it was state financed by Russians. My dad was one of the producers on it.
