You have to wonder if LC was under the influence of psilocybin when he came up with the ideas...

Drugs, including opiates, were widely available at the time and it would be remarkable if he hadn't imbibed at one time or many. Most writers, especially poets, were supported by the stuff. Even Queen Vic – the woman not the pubs – had a dabble over the years. Most of the stuff that is praised nowadays, with the likes of Shelley, Byron, etc, was written under the influence of various intoxicants. Nitrous oxide was still being used by some at that time.

And yet, literature students are asked, ‘What did [whomever] mean when he said . . .’. The bloke, almost always blokes, but Shelley's first Mrs has a question mark against her name, probably had no idea himself.

You see, I think drugs have done some good things for us. I really do. And if you don't believe drugs have done good things for us, do me a favor. Go home tonight. Take all your albums, all your tapes and all your CDs and burn them. 'Cause you know what, the musicians that made all that great music that's enhanced your lives throughout the years were rrreal fking high on drugs. The Beatles were so fking high they let Ringo sing a few tunes.
