February 2023 Photo Competition

For February I would like to try something a bit different - Food Photography.

What I would like to see is a photo similar to the sort of thing one might see in a food magazine or advertisement. The food itself need not be elaborate, for instance a slice of cake is as likely to win as anything else as long as it makes me want to eat it, and there are no distractions in the image.

I want to see evidence of artistic intent and a bit of effort. Backlighting is generally good for showing texture so control of light is going to be key.

So come on, you've all got food at home, give it a go.

ok, so it's probably not winning anything on 'fine photography' judging, but it's still my favourite food picture - both the 'cheeseburger' contents (the whole patty is a lump of cheese) and the backdrop of the jungle and lake.

The competition is still wide open and an easy win for anyone who wants to study the brief and then get their camera out and set up some food, and take an attractive photo of it. Remember the bit about keeping distractions out of the shot, the only things in the picture should be the things you've chosen to have in it.

Off camera flash is generally the easiest to use, but failing that light from a window can be used to great effect.

Just about a week to go and so far there's only been one photo that really fitted the brief. Still hoping that somebody will make a competition out of it. Even a picture of a shop-bought cake could do it if it was a decent picture.

Here's one from a wedding a while ago.

I have an idea, which I hope to have time to have a go at on Monday/Tues involving a fruit pastille, but in case that doesn't work out, at least this cake is an entry for now.

An easy win for Whoozit



Unfortunately his was the only picture which fitted the brief. Apart from that one there were a few novelty shots and some which were clearly taken in a restaurant or similar, and that wasn't what was wanted at all, no matter how attractive the food.

Thanks singlecoil. I confess this doesn't seem like the strongest win ever. I'd hoped putting an on brief pic would prompt some extra submissions.

it surprised me too, what I was hoping for, with the pictures that actually featured food, that I would see somebody creating the scene rather than just taking a picture of a scene that was already there.
