Good summary, thanks. So the benefit was shallower DOF from the larger sensor, coupled with more accurate focus and better high-ISO ability, probably because the Sony was much newer than your Nikon. f1.4 does test AF systems. I was mostly trying to figure out whether it was the 'mirrorless' part that made any difference, and it seems not.

What Nikon did you use before?

It was a D7000.

Yes that is pretty much it. The mirrorless bit would not have made any visual difference to my photos, but it was really nice to have a much more compact camera. The full frame Sony body was small in comparison to the Nikon crop sensor DSLR.

If I wasn't already kitted up (D500 etc) and was just dabbling I might go for one of those retro ones wiv real knobs an' stuff!

I have been using an A7Rm2 since it first came out (2015) and it has been terrific. Quite versatile, an increasing number of good lenses and 50MP images that need parking somewhere - needs a big HD! I don't think t is as good as some of the other A7 models or the A9 for sports etc but it has proved a very good all rounder. Would like to upgrade but not too much in the piggy bank right now. Anybody got any experience with the Sony A!?

Thanks for the insights chaps. Very helpful.

Got a cracking trade in from Camera World on my D7200 and DX lenses and a brand new Sony A7iv will be in my hands next week!

Keeping the D850 for a bit so I can run the two side by side and see the reality of the differences if any. Got a couple of really nice photo and video assignments over the next few months so will be able to get a real-world feel for things.
