Now go and buy a camera!

Go on!

Now!

All in good time my man. Wouldnt you rather wait for next years rumours to start, then bring them into the equation before making up your mind?

After reading owners opinions on the 1D/s and mkII models, and the "there is no going back once you've used one" comments, I googled for prices and was surprised how much money some companies were knocking off. But I cant justify the price nor the sensibility of buying a top of the line camera as a first slr.

I'll let you know what I end up getting when Ive got it

I'd prefer to just buy a camera today and start taking photos

The 1D series aren't for everyone though - they're much bigger and heavier than the 350D/20D/5D, and there have been moments when I've thought seriously about buying a 5D to use when I don't want to lug my 1Ds around.

Get the 20D for a snip and buy a really f**k-off lens with the extra dosh

Reason being, the image from a 30D will look exactly the same as a 20D.

Edited to say: Of course, as you rightly point out, the D200 has a massive two-million pixel advantage..

D200 also has better frame rate. bigger buffer, better metering, weather proofing, flash comander built in, plus the larger amount of pixels plus low noise.

Most sensible posting on here in a while! The whole quest for megapixels thing is a slippery slope.

Now where is my credit card, I need a D200...

i disagree

the only reason i get paid to take photos is that i have 16 megapixels. I was paid less when I only had 5.8, and nothing when I had 3. Bring on the 50MP camera. Maybe I should consider medium format

Sounds like you are far more interested in cameras that photography to me. Diving in with a top spec dslr is possibly not the most sensible thing to do, as it will take a while to extract any good photos from it. I went from a cybershot to a 1d and found the learning curve very steep. I still dont think im getting the best from what the 1dsII has to offer.

My advice would be to get something fairly low level and learn the ropes before committing the money on kit that has a zillion features you will probably never use. Get an entry level dslr (is that still the 300d?) and some lenses (try a 28-135IS to get the ball rolling)have a play, take some shots, learn from the more vocal people here and see where it takes you.

I should have added that this is at 300dpi without any upressing, which is one of the "holy grails" of DSLRs. You won't be able to do that with a 1D

Don't be silly - what you need is one of these! Just think how much you'd get paid if you had 300MP!

There were times initially when I was intimidated by my 20D, and what it took to get even and 'average' image. To buy a 1ds mkII (or even a 5D) as your first foray into the world of (D)SLR would be unwise IMO. These aren't point-and-shoot cameras - I reckon you'd actually get worse results from a £4k DSLR than you would a £70 point-and-shoot if you weren't familiar with workings etc.

One thing to also consider is how much of a pain in the ar$e DSLR's can be in regard to file sizes etc. Their files eat up space on your computer, you lose whole rooms to storage of DVD-r's and you spend a lifetime at your computer deciding whether or not to crop/if there's too much colour saturation/if image 002345.cr2 is better than image 002346.cr2 etc etc. I find this with my 8mp 20D, let alone a 16mp 1ds!

Do yourself a favour; go out and buy a 20D/30D, buy a couple of good lenses (I still think the 70-200 IS is an unwise initial purchase - I recommend a £70 50mm 1.8 prime, and if you really want to go OTT buy a 24-70L), take thousands of photo's, and post your best results on here

or i could just extrapolate the files upwards and pretend i had a better camera. even better i could tell clients my pictures were 22 trillion DPI, and I wouldn't even be lieing. now theres an idea

OK, so your clients are the fools

But back to Bob and his twitching wallet. A DSLR is not something you can just pick up, point and shoot and get the front cover of Vogue. There's a heck of a lot to learn, and spend, as you work up the tree - and I'm not talking professionals necessarily, but just being master of the thing. Even my D70, which is lower on the food chain than what you're considering, has enough buttons, settings and variables to keep me fully occupied. This is why everyone is advising you to get a mid-range DSLR and learn to fly it before you rush out buying loads of accessories you don't even know you need.

It may sound boring but I'm sure you don't want to be the 'all the gear, no idea' bloke who tries to find 'Cuisine Mode' on his 1DS Mk2 etc...

Why not hire an aspiring porter like myself, who'll carry it for you Ed

I could start off by practising taking pics of pots and kettles around the house

I prefer shooting colour and emotion, and have convinced myself that the 70-200 will be the best walk about lens for me, enabling me to zoom into scenes and capture everything that grabs my attention. Im sure the 70-200 will get more use than a 'landscape lense' I know I'll want some wider angle lenses eventually, but if I could afford one lens no day 1, then that would be it. I think

You and Matt are right. As fantastic as it looks, Im sure its not the best decision I could make. Theres nothing wrong with a bit of googling and oogling though, especially with the price match wars going on.

edited to translate my crypto-facto-text back into common english.
