Dagnabbit!

I've been practicing the colour on B&W technique for ages, and just when I do one that I like, someone beats me to it...

Now it's going to look like I've just swiped nick francis's idea. B*m. Well, I'm going to post it, anyway. Don't vote for it if you think it's too similar to nick's.

It's a couple of buskers in the main square in San Sebastián's old town.

for me... without a context spot colour is nonsense. if it isn't making a statement why even use it? i'd be more interested in seeing the picture entered in full colour or full black and white...

With mine, I was just playing around, trying to get the technique right, and I quite liked the result. The original picture, either in colour or in B&W, is a bit fussy - the buskers are not sufficiently prominent. By picking them out in colour, and slightly blurring the left-hand side, I felt it gave them a bit more impact.

fair enough it is your picture after all.

but it's used all too often to make silk purses.

i like your picture, maybe it is too fussy, maybe they aren't prominent enough, but i'd prefer that to a cheap trick.
photography is totally subjective and as photographers it's good to follow our hearts and guts. that is hopefully what is making us push the button when we do.
i'm giving you my opinion for your thought is all.

i have used it in the past too - but it had a meaning rather than it being a device...

thank you both but we need to stop quoting the picture too. it's an oldie from a cold day in 2003 - here to try and illustrate context.

can you guys edit the pic out of your posts, thanks in advance.

edit: lol chim knee cheers!

Thanks Mrs Fish!

I have to say, it looks fantastic as a 14x11 - the guy in the blue T-shirt just jumps out at you - and it's straight out of the camera with no PS work whatsoever!

Help, I don't know which picture to post...

This one, Candid and white, no photoshoppery other than croppiing in...

This one, playing around a little with it, although the graininess came with the original shot due to it being darkish, just boosted it colourwise.

or this one? the dog didn't pose for the pic, but he is looking at the camera...

Or this, just boosted contrast, made it B&W

What to do?
