what i want to know is whether its possible to change the gearing on my montain bike to make it faster. I have hit 30 mph but ran out of legs,

How many legs do you need!!!

Honestly, either get a different cassete (cogs on the rear) that have a 11t cog on, or bigger chainrings.

However if its a cheap bike i.e. <£400 you're most likely buggered as those parts are not seperate nor easily replaced.

Try riding around on a lower gear for a while and practise pedalling faster
If you really want higher gearing check out Parkers international or settle cycles for TA chainrings , you can get them for most regular chainsets.
How large you can go will depend on the range your front mech changer can cope with and how much adjustment there is, ie bigger chainring further up the seat tube.
Oh and don't forget to check the chain length, if it is worn or stretched you may need to replace the whole lot together.
