I was using the yellow reg because it kept free-flowing when not in use...it was fine otherwise.

What for? It makes it harder to get at the reg, and impossible to jettison if necessary. I normally carry it in line with my body (vertically) but wanted to try it across my body (horizontally) to see what it was like. I must admit the cord had slipped a bit so it was hanging a couple of inches lower than I'd have liked, but we only did 1 swim through and wasn't a problem. It'll be going back on the usual way next dive though.
