Head of the River today - reportage really ...

Any rowers among you will know that the Tideway Head of the River race was cancelled in appalling conditions today, before it was called off a number of crews sank, including this one, Leander V ...

























Note the abandoned boat in the background ... it wasn't the only one ...

Brings back some great memories from my early teenage years , I steared a Quintin eight to finish 6th back in 71 . We had a bad start number , 35 , and iirc caught 12 boats .

done a few heads on the thames but never done the that one my bro was supposed to be racing for his uni but was ill he was quite glad when he saw that it was all cancelled as he was gutted at missing doing it

Do you mean Quintin Boat Club or Quintin School?
I Stroked the school first eight in the mid to late 60s
and seem to remember always coming about 250th

John Peters was stroke at that time , and his father Tom was the Boatman.

Whilst I understand the sentiment, as a Leander member I can't really endorse it ...

When it goes well the Tideway is a fantastic row, but when it goes badly its pretty miserable.

My favourite memory was as a new entry starting 415th, and finishing 14th.

I think Leander is a slightly differen5t club from when i was competing against them in the early 70's

They were normally our closest rivals.

One year we met them in the Thames Cup eights final at Marlow , along with Hampton Grammar in the middle station. Within 30 strokes we both had clear water on Hampton and battled for their water .

It ended with me having the tucked tight to the bank and "washing them down" all along the enclosure , with literally hundreds of supporters chearing to see the sight .

The umpires launch was stuck behind the Hampton crew a long way back and it was just a no rules battle to the end .

The guy who stroked the Leander eight that year always reminded me of it whenever he saw me.

I loved thos days , such fond competitive memories , I am sure it was those years that made me so competitive in anything else I do .

Its great to see how well our crews do now nowadays at international level , one very good thing from lottery money

Yes! I was in that boat in the background, before it sunk obviously. It was Marlow I, and we were number 41.

Thanks Emma, I did send a few papers emails with example pics/links but got no response. Guess they weren't that interested and I didn't see it reported in the print news anywhere.

The Grauniad had a photo and report, in the news section I think not Sport.
