Not the best images, but the following pictures show Ants 'farming' Aphids for their honeydew.

It's fascinating to watch these tiny creatures and their simbiotic relationship. The Ants protect the Aphids from predators, whilst the Aphids provide the Ants favourite food...........Honeydew.

The ants tend to their flock, with great care and will remove any that are found to be sick.

If you look closely, you will see the ant receiving the honeydew from the aphid.

My rose bush did not fare so well, but it was worth it to watch these tiny creatures at work!

Sony RX10iii with Canon 72mm Close-up Macro Lens - worked quite well actually, wish I has tried it earlier in the season! This was at f8, 1/800, iso100 and diffused flash smile

Considering this thread prompted my path in to photography, I really should post here more often! This might be of interest to you chaps though. I recently reviewed the Laowa 2:1 macro lens and it's pretty good!: https://fstoppers.com/originals/fstoppers-reviews-...

Hi folks,

Been a long long time since I've posted here, but I'm trying to get my spark for photography back. My favourite kind has always been macro - currently have a Canon 60mm macro lens that gives decent shots, but I'm looking for an upgrade. I've got my 30th coming up, so thinking i might have some extra cash lying about that I could use to put towards a new lens. I've been looking into the 180mm f3.5 L and the MPE-65 but honestly I'm so far removed from the game at the moment I haven't a clue! Any advice would be appreciated? Also probably need a new flash, since I left the batteries in my ring flash for about 6 years and they've leaked all over the damn thing.

Cheers,

Allan

Good to see your post Allan.....welcome back!

I'm a Nikon user, so can't comment too much on Canon. However, the MPE-65 looks like an awesome piece of kit from the results that I have seen. Whatever you go for, i'm sure that your enthusiasm for macro will return really quickly.

I shoot all of my macro hand-held and still use an old Marumi Ringflash (very cheap on ebay), as I find it quicker to react to my subjects with a simple set-up. Especially, if they are in tight spaces, where a bulkier flash system would get in the way.

Looking forwards to seeing your work.

Hi Allan! wavey

The MPE is an amazing bit of kit but a b'stard to use and unless you want to photograph really small stuff I wouldn't bother. I would go for a 100mm (L version if you want a treat but they are optically very very similar) and a Raynox 150 to stick on it when you want a bit more magnification. A good flash with diffuser is essential (as I'm sure you know).

Let us know how you get on thumbup
