I might have to get a ring flash to help with shadows. Thanks to you all for the inspiration.

Hi folks,
Been a long long time since I've posted here, but I'm trying to get my spark for photography back. My favourite kind has always been macro - currently have a Canon 60mm macro lens that gives decent shots, but I'm looking for an upgrade. I've got my 30th coming up, so thinking i might have some extra cash lying about that I could use to put towards a new lens. I've been looking into the 180mm f3.5 L and the MPE-65 but honestly I'm so far removed from the game at the moment I haven't a clue! Any advice would be appreciated? Also probably need a new flash, since I left the batteries in my ring flash for about 6 years and they've leaked all over the damn thing.
Cheers,
Allan

The MPE is an amazing bit of kit but a b'stard to use and unless you want to photograph really small stuff I wouldn't bother. I would go for a 100mm (L version if you want a treat but they are optically very very similar) and a Raynox 150 to stick on it when you want a bit more magnification. A good flash with diffuser is essential (as I'm sure you know).
Let us know how you get on
Cheers,
Allan

Have just treated myself to the 100mm L (Found one on MPB in 'like new' condition for £300 cheaper than new..) and the MR-14EX flash.. Hasn't arrived yet but hoping the condition matches how it was described. Will a Raynox 150 be compatible with the ring flash on the end of the lens also? Is there a diffuser you'd recommend for the ring flash?
Cheers,
Allan
You may not need a diffuser given that the light from the ring flash will not be coming from a concentrated area like a conventional flash, give it a try and see what the results are like.Cheers,
Allan
Welcome to the slippery slope!
