Okay gents, just getting going with some Macro for me, for this year.
I`m pretty new to it anyway, but also just getting used to a new Canon EOS-R I`ve just bought to replace my Canon 5DSR.
These shots here are some I took in the garden at home yesterday, but I feel are lacking in sharpness, ESPECIALLY against those of Vintage Racer and Dibbydobbler !
Any tips for me please, gents - or critique even - no offence will be taken, as I`m looking to improve !
I used yesterday my Canon EOS-R, coupled with the mighty Canon 100 F2.8L Macro lens, and fitted to that (at either end of course) a 25mm extension tube, and the Raynox M150. I also used, for some of the photos an un-diffused (yes, mistake I know) Godox TT685 Speedlight.
See what you think please, and any comments welcome, cheers

They are not far off Neil - generally speaking I try to maximise dof but f25 might be taking it a step too far, maybe dial that back a few stops to something like f16-f18 and sharpness will improve a lot. I try to keep the iso down too although on your fancy camera it probably doesn’t matter that much!
A difussed flash is essential though - definitely need to sort that out as a priority.
Keep up the good work

Many thanks DD, much appreciated !A difussed flash is essential though - definitely need to sort that out as a priority.

As you say, I`ll back the aperture down to F16, and keep an eye on the ISO too. TBH, I don`t use my Speedlight much so very rusty on it, and when I attached the flash, I never gave the ISO a second thought, and had left it on auto.
I`ve been reading some of yours, and VR`s advice and settings on this thread, so, as with the f-stop, I`ll back it off to around 200 (unless I can get it lower, of course), and try it from there.
The diffuser has now been fitted to the Speedlight already, in readiness for the next session !
I also struggle - massively - with DOF because I shoot hand-held, so I literally end up swaying backwards and forwards, once I`m focussed right in, to try and put the focus-plane where I want it - and it`s NOT easy !
I`m thinking maybe I should be shooting whilst looking at the rear screen, maybe, rather than through the viewfinder ?
Anyway, we`ll see - everything`s a learning curve...
Thankyou very much for your help mate, it really is appreciated.

You are welcome mate
I also shoot handheld and nailing the focus is tricky! I have tried a few different methods over the years and to be honest I get a better hit rate just leaving it on autofocus (others will disagree with this and many do it manually though so it's worth finding out what works for you)
Cheers

Ah right, interesting to see that you use AF, but as you say, looking at your images, the proof`s certainly in the pudding there !
Well, I`ve already tried your general settings today regarding shutter speed, ISO and aperture, and they`ve already made a good deal of difference; as has the diffuser, so thanks again mate.
Out in earnest tomorrow - if the weather`s up for it, of course - at a "proper" location, rather than just the very limited amount of stuff in my back garden, so we`ll see what that brings. If I can actually manage to get any keepers I think are worth it, I`ll stick them up on here.
Cheers again DD

A couple more from today...
A bit surprising there weren`t more insects out today, in view of the warm weather, and I don`t know enough about them to know if it`s just a little early for them in April, or not ?
