Ddarno just noticed you are using a Tamron 150-600 now, how are you finding it ? I was viewing the pics at 100% and they looked a little soft... but the shutter speed was very slow...

On the whole I would say I'm happy with it for the price. My previous long lens was the Canon 70-300 which I just found to be lacking in reach for me. I've not tried one of the 400 or 500mm Canon lenses as they were more than I wanted to pay as a hobbist. There are a couple of groups on Flickr for images from the lens which may give you a more balanced view of what the lens can do, as I suspect the softness is more operator than lens. The only downside is the weight of the lens it really should be used with a good tripod, rather than the mono-pod I'm currently using.
Not sure if that's of much use to you.
Cheers
Dave

Those look a lot sharper to me ddarno ! I guess 1/125 is just too slow even for IS+monopod.
I caught these buzzards doing what I can only assume was a mating flight, they were wheeling and doing all kinds of close formation flying across a huge area. Please bear in mind this is basically a 100% crop due to difficulty tracking them !

I shot a whole bunch on my 400L f5.6 at around 1/250 (didn't want to push the iso too far on my crop body) and got very few keepers - really need at least 1/400 or preferably faster. That's an outstanding shot of a Jay. I heard that humans used to kill them as they got a bad reputation as egg thieves, and they have never forgiven us. I have never managed closer than 20-30 metres before they fly off.
Some unusual lighting on this Mallard really brought out the colours, a combination of a light coloured river bed, shallow water and lighting angle.

First test of my new toy ( T16A teleconvertor ) and this happened in front of me....not perfect as I was fumbling to set exposure and shutter speed correctly.
