Will be having a new s/s sports exhaust from Hayward and Scott fitted to my to S3C on Wednesday. To save future agg, I am thinking about have the Cats removed at the same time. What I need to know is this...
Will their removal effect the ECU set up. I have had mixed input although two chaps who had their's removed stated that their cars were fine and required no re-tuning etc. I would agree, particularly bearing in mind that the Lamber sensors are situated before the Cats. Does anyone know for sure? (The car is a 92 so can have the Cats removed)

I visited Hayward & Scott after seeing their name mentioned a number of times in car mags including our own Sprint. When I got there, my eyes popped out of my head. There was an original GT40, Morgan, Astons, E-Types to name but a few. I thought that if Hayward & Scott exhausts were good enough for them, they were good enough for me! Their work shops are vast and the exhaust sustems quite literally works of art.
He took a look at the rattly exhaust under my car and pointed out hairline cracks that even the MOT didn't pick up. This guy new his stuff!I asked how much and he said around £375 + VAT fitted (stainless sports exhaust). As they build to order, you can explain what you want, ie ficking loud! I am also looking to get the Cats removed at the same time. The only minus point is that there is approx a 2 month waiting list.
Anyway, I will let you know how it goes.

I had a 1990 S3c and bought a SS sports exhaust from Wedge Automotive (years ago now though) and because of the age of the car I didn't need to keep the cats, to be honest I removed them because the car wasn't running too well and was much better afterwards. I was told to leave the Lamda (sp?) Sensors off, but I have no idea why (other than at my next service they put them back on the car was awful - so back off again).

I may be one of the people you mention as having discussed this with already if it was after the second V Water meeting.
When I de-catted mine I left the lambda sensors connected and everything ran fine, I had a deeper exhaust note but the decat did not require any remapping.
The lambda sensors take readings from the exhaust gases before the cats and feed the info to the ECU which runs in 'closed loop' mode. If you disconnect the sensors or remove them (ie complete new exhaust and headers) then the car would need to run 'open loop' as per non-cat 2.9s and 2.8s.

Thanks JSG. I think it was you I spoke to about CAT removal. The new exhaust starts from the down pipes so I shouldn't need to take the sensors off. Did you have the car MOT'd after CAT removal? I'm not thinking about the legality side, just wondered if there was any change in the emmissions.
I will be leaving the car with Hayward & Scott. I wouldn't fancy trying to fit the bugger myself!

It was MOT'd after and passed fine - I'd assume the emmissions would be in line with a non cat S3. In fact I seem to remember the guy doing the testing commenting that they weren't that strict on older cars.
