I have decided that the sticky caliper is just too sticky - so new is needed.

I hear the 260mm disc upgrade is worth doing but can someone point me towards the exact source of the calipers - I understand this is xr4i with abs not 4x4 and must include carriers???

if anyone has an ebay or eurocarparts link, that would be much appreciated as it narrows my field of sifting.

Cheers,

Steve

My old V6 was done exactly as you describe. XR4i with ABS and the carriers. 260 mm grooved tarox. Made a noticeable difference. Took a while to source second hand calipers

Think you'll need to look around for some second hand calipers because most new or exchange ones from places like www.brakesinternational.com don't include the carrier scratchchin

I believe granada Cosworth front brakes will also fit with only a little fettling for 283mm discs.

Here is a guide for fitting them to a Chim, I think they had the same 240mm brakes as us at the beginning.

http://www.rv8r.co.uk/brakeupgrade.html

They should still fit inside our standard wheels too.

Whatever calipers you go for make sure you get the sliping caliper brackets aswell - there's plenty of calipers about but not so many with the brackets included.

Steve - I have a set of 260mm calipers in need of a refurb if that is any use. Also includes the mounting brackets, and I have some Mintex M1144 pads to suit them as well.

jed - I`ll have a measure tomoorow night to see what I have. If they are smaller than 260's, you may well be on. How much are you looking for?

Just what you're looking for.

or

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SIERRA-XR4i-RWD-FRONT-BR...

They come up on Ebay fairly regularly and if you're lucky you can get a pair for under £20.00.

Thanks to Jed, xr4i calipers are now in my garage awaiting refurb. This gives me a reason to try the bead blaster before stripping old seals and refurbing with a new kit etc as required.

Now to source some discs, which I assume are xr4i 260mm vented with no spacers. This should be a suitable 'mild upgrade'

thought i must just fit the calipers this morning............but no, at the first step i sheared a bolt in the new carrier!

Sheared almost flush with the surface and was coated in locktite...................grrr. Removed quick and then tried the alternative to tap-tap-tap with a punch or easy outs; the weld a washer, then a nut method;

sheared off......

weld washer then nut;

come out you........

this is a PITA though - simple little job delayed because of my desire to ensure these buggers were properly torqued up. scary the bolts were a soft as shxt. full set of 8.8's on order, which should suffice.

8.8's yikes... they're just "general purpose"

Should be minimum 10.9

The beauty of the 260mm upgrade is its simplicity, pair of calipers (they are bigger calipers not just bigger discs), pads and discs and that's it, no brackets, adaptors or machining required.

in my humble opinion they are more than sufficient for road use.

If yours is standard they'll be the ATE single piston calipers, M16 was much earlier cars, M Series and Taimar, possibly Wedges?

Got a few bits in my shed, let me know if you're interested wink

byebye Some of us are still here! Mainly lurking in the background, but still here.

For what it's worth I completely agree with you on the 260mm front brake upgrade. It is simple and I can't imagine what the 283mm versions offer to make them worth the extra hassle. 23mm I guess spin
