After a weekend of bombing around and hoping to empty the fuel tank to below half,I managed to remove the fuel sender from the tank without gushing fuel down the driveway.I got a new seal and lockring from a Rover dealer(parts from the original mini fuel tank which I recognised)Cleaned all the rust around the tank area and rebuilt.The guage works correct now,but on a roadtest,any corner and the guage pendulums up and down.Is this the norm? or is there a resistor to slow the effect down.

Its prob just the fuel sloshing around in the tank - I suspect they all do it to an extent, but you're noticing it more now because you're keeping an eye on the gauge.

mine decides it will come to life a couple of times a week. I then have to have a quick look and then try and work outt when the next fill up will be! (seems to come to life more now it is warmer and hood down more)

see my thread on petrol gauge for some words of wisdom from other S owners. When I get time I will investigate mine more fully.

Was your car the blue S3 with the blue gear lever and steering wheel at the Berks meet on Tuesday?

JSG,yes it was.I was sort off chatting to various people and learning curve is very steep at the moment!!!Finances are stopping the tinkering for the time being,but I have a large tin of Hammerite and Waxoil to keep me company 'til payday.Maybe a meet up next month?

Hi Justin,

Couple of quick questions...

was the original fuel sender unit metal or plastic?

if metal, what part nos did you buy to replace it?

Mike,I only bought the locking ring which is identical to the TVR part and a rubber seal.The mini fuel sender will fit in the hole and has the benefit of the earth spade connector on the base,so those that have snapped them off the tank can retrofit it.The sender will need a bit of manipulation as the arm fits in at right angle to the tank face and will just need a bit of bending.I did notice that on the old sender after cleaning it up,that the letters'SW' were on it.This must mean that the sender is of Stuart Warner guages,so original replacements can't be that hard to find.
