hello,

i'm a french quite new owner of an "S" from 02/02/89 and i have several questions about this car.

- how could i be "sure" of the model i have? S1 or S2?
- i noticed that one of my exhaust pipe is in contact with a vertical part of the chassis, just after the left maniflow. Did some of you already have the pb and the solution ?
- Is it possible replace external mirors by the S3 ones ? (from citroen CX i think)

that's all for the moment

Look at www.geocities.com/peter.nixon for the differences between S1/S2.

Primarily the S1 was a 2.8 engine, the S2 a 2.9.

Replacing the mirrors is a massive job because the Xantia types come out of a shaped hole in the door - which you won't have.

S1 HAS ALL-BLACK BUMPERS. S2 HAS SMALL CHROME TRIM ON BUMPERS. THAT'S THE EASIEST WAY TO TELL.

THIS SHOULD NOT BE THE CASE. THE EXHAUST HAS PROBABLY HIT THE GROUND AND BENT AT SOME TIME IN THE PAST. EXHAUST PIPE IS USUALLY QUITE STRONG AND THE ONLY WAY TO BEND IT BACK WOULD BE TO TAKE IT OFF THE CAR AND BEND IT BACK INTO SHAPE PROPERLY. DO NOT BEND IT ON THE CAR AS YOU COULD DAMAGE THE EXHAUST MANIOLD.

THE CITROEN AX / CX MIRRORS NEED A SPECIAL MOUNTING WHICH IS FIBREGLASSED INTO THE DOOR. AS SOMEONE HAS ALREADY SAID IT IS A BIG JOB TO DO A CONVERSION.

Sorry I used capitals in my reply, but it's the easiest way to show my answers.

Except that there are S1 with 2.8 engines with chrome trim, S2 trim cars with 2.9 and so on. These are the s1.5 cars and there are a lot of them as the changeover was far from clean.

To me the main difference is the engine. If it is a 2.8 it is either a S1 or a S1.5. If it is a 2.9 it is either a S1.5 or a S2.

Big discussion in the S bible naturally.

My S2 has lots of S3 features, electric boot release is just one of them. Does that make mine an S2.5 then?

No it loses 0.4 due to a lack of originality and a wooden steering wheel. It is officially a 1.6. To go with the rear lights...

ok,

according to these details, mine seems to be an early S2 or an S1.5.
But i want to be sure of the motor, because of unleaded fuel ! Is it right that the 2,8 has only 2 hole in cylinder-head instead of 3 for the 2,9 ? or is there another way to see the difference ? Injection system ? something wrote somewhere ?

thanks in advance.

2.8 is mechanical fuel injection

2.9 is electronic, and will probably have EFI in large letters on the top of the Engine.

The plenum chamber on top of the engine, (large alloy block) into which the intake air flows, is the easiest way to tell.
If it's a 2.8 engine, the alloy block will be a large square object with the FORD logo stamped on it.
If it's the 2.9 engine, the alloy block will be more rounded, long and fairly narrow with EFI stamped on it.
