Matt,

Sorry I've not been in touch but in process of moving to a new flat...

Just wanted to say thanx for a cracking lunch and a very pleasant afternoon. Good to see the twin again and will be round for lunch the next time I'm in Herefordshire.

The hospitality will be extended if you happen to be in London !

Cheers

Mark

Thanks Mark, glad you liked it . I wasn't worried I hadn't heard from you, just hoped you managed to find your way back ok..

Must meet again soon, however the Twin is going to need some attention as you know..

Had a quote for the work:

1 day (8hrs) to remove engine and gearbox etc (assuming problems with heads)

worst case £300 on the gearbox (hopefully cheaper)

1 day (8hrs) to put it all back together again.

Whilst heads are off I've been suggested a stage 2 conversion and spring replacement, which will probably come in at about another half day or so...

so £25 and hour, thats 20 hrs labour £500 : gearbox £300 : Misc Parts (springs, head gaskets, bolts etc) £100 or so : Vat £157.50

Grand total: £1057.50

:sigh:

Matt

PS anyone think this is a bit pricey or not too bad ??

Doesn't seem to bad to be fair as it is a lot of work. Having had the heads of the car and off PaulV's aswell I know how long it can take....

Although I am suspiscious concerning 'engine and gearbox' removal as it possible to remove the gearbox without removing the engine. Also there is no need to remove the engine to remove the heads (you've seen the photo's) therefor I would question the time given there.

To have clutch done at Tower View is arounf the £400 mark I seem to remember. That includes the parts ...

Did have a very big 'moment' just up the road from yours though.... I even remebered the bend when Louise had driven us out to lunch. Just up from yours. Go left signs etc etc and wasn't going that quickly, got to the corner and braked hard to scrub as much speed as I could and thought I'd easy go round until we got into the bend to find that it goes back on itself almost.

No way I was going to do any braking as it would have meant a trip through a hedge on a blind bend unable to see what was coming round the corner.

Decided to tackle the corner and so turned in. Was doing alright but ultimately the car wasn't happy and the back came round. We were at 90 degrees to the verge at one point but still managed to hold it and get round the corner after much squealing of tyres !!

I couldn't believe it as we were just mooching along .... There were 2 cars coming the other way and it must of given them quite a fright to be fair. Carried on down the road towards Ledbury and saw a blue Chimaera on the way ....

Ended up going cross country back to Norfolk through Evesham across to Chipping Norton and through Northamptonshire, MK to Bedford along to Cmabridge and up the A11 home. Fantastic run through the country ...

Hiya... LOL yes that is a fairly sharp bend isn't it... dead easy in a FWD car but a bit more of a challenge in RWD..

I thought you had to prat about with a bit of the chassis to get the gearbox out without the engine ?? am I wrong..?

I was assuming the heads would be off to be helicoiled once the manifold bolts had buggered themselves up.

don't suppose you know which box it is btw ? mk9 or something else ?

Cheers
Matt

Not much !!!

The gearbox will be one of 2 ...

Type N or MT75. There was a lot of debate about this all away agao but it turns out that the later type box wasn't introduced as early as was first though.

The bible details the difference between the 2 boxes and tells you which you will have (you need to look under it to check)

I think you will have the early box which is the MT75 and not the later Type N box. But I may have that the wrong way round.

If you speak with Tower View I am sure they will advise you on how to remove the box without removing the engine. Its not a major mod and not alays necessary. They didn't do it on mine for instance ...

Cheers

Manifold bolts. These will be made from wood and so therefor I suspect you will be taking the heads off.....

It is worth getting some penetrating oil on them now and everyday unbtil they start work on the car as they may get them out.

My father and I didn't manage to get them all out on the car and he's a lifelong engineer. We did however manage to drill them and re-tap the threads on the bench which saved some money ..... heat, penetrating oil, sweat, heat, oil, heat ,sweat, hammer, blood, sweat, swear and then they were out !!!!!

Thanks.. have just spoken to them and they reckon 6 hours for a clutch change..
..there must have been a colt/telewest router fault between their servers and us then, they were definitely missing earlier, happily I can get to their website now too..

Cheers
Matt.

When I took my engine and gearbox out I found that the engine sits on two engine mounts at the front (left and right) and the gearbox sits on a mount just under the gearchange. The rear mount is bolted to a plate that goes between the inner chassis rails and on my car this plate is removable. I imagine it's possible to undo this plate and remove the box from underneath although I didn't try it as I didn't have either an appropriate method of supporting the box while lowering it and I couldn't get the car high enough to do the operation safely. In the end I took it all out of the front engine and all. I'm sure I still needed to unbolt the gearbox mount chassis plate in order to lower the gearbox (while connected to the engine) so that I could lift the front of the engine out with the manifolds still attached.

While they have it apart I would definitely fit a new clutch unless you've had one put on recently as it's such a bugger to get to later. The clutch kit I got cost about 130 quid I think.
