It'll likely be the 'wobble board' inside the first silencer, where it's rusted around the welds and come adrift.

That said, someone's been in there before as there's a single pipe join between the two silencers, when there's normally only silencer against silencer! So who knows what they've done.

Thank you very much for the advice. i guess it means i can at least look at opening up the exhaust and seeing whats inside and if anything is coming apart or not secure.

No worries. I've got an old scrap S1 exhaust lying around here you can have, but it might not be much better than what you've got (except the silencer connection!)

Have a search, as there are some threads with pics on what you'll find if you cut it open.

Ha don't mine opened up by the local garage

Squre box same as the one showed. Needed some tacking up.

Front oval section has perforated pipes in side which rot too and can be loose ... replaced whole oval section with 2 round pipes

I'd bin that exhaust personally. I know the Cologne's not exactly a 'heavy breather', but that system's pretty crude and restrictive in places.
