Maybe a newbie question..BUT..does a Rover box fit between the chassis rails of a standard S1.5?

Other than the gearbox mounting points I don't believe that bit is any different. Mine is on stands in bits that moment so I can easily crawl under it to check any dimensions you want. (and the gearbox is in bits on the bench so even easier to measure)

Some things to bear in mind about the lt77:

They're all old and have had years of being abused and having all sorts of weird oil in them. Any box you get your hands on is likely worn and some of the parts are NLA.

The v8s box as a complete thing is specific to the car. All the bits of it are used in at least *something* else but rebuilding one is the same adventure in the land of "what the hell is that bit from" as the rest of the car.

If you're fitting a different lt77 in you will have to make/adapt the gear lever and its housing. The one on the v8s is from a series 3 xj6. (the lever itself is adapted in typical TVR fashion with a grinder, welder and a short length of flat bar)

There are '000's of these 'boxes running around in Land Rovers and old Rovers etc so there are specialists about which recondition the LT77. I haven't used them but this firm was featured on one of the classic cars shows a couple of years ago *

Make sure you get one of the later heavy duty ones and seriously consider using Difflock folowing the rebuild. Do not use ATF regardless of what the "specialists" tell you.

Sounds like an interesting conversion so good luck with it

* I called Ashcroft following that programme and asked about a rebuild cost. I was told by the lady who answered the 'phone that there was no such thing as a RWD LT77 'box. Maybe she's been sacked by now and they have someone who knows what they are talking about answering the 'phone laugh

It's the big bits like gears and shafts you can't necessarily get. I'll attempt to put together a rough list of what's actually in it as I put it back together.
That rebuild kit contains several bits that aren't the right parts for the TVR box, the oil filter is completely different and the oil pump is the older thinner one.

As far as I can tell without having opened the bottles yet difflock is ATF, it's very runny, bright red and in a fuchs/silkolene bottle.

It might be the same colour but the manufacturers might take issue with you on that one.

I've had ATF, semi-synthetic 75W/90 and Difflock in mine in that order. The ATF caused the syncros to crash, something which never happened with the old oil so that came out PDQ. The semi-synthetic solved that issue and made everything smooth again but couldn't solve the 1st to 2nd notchy shift when cold. Difflock does what it says on the can.

I didn't say it didn't work smile

I think it's a very nice ATF carefully chosen to be good at doing the job it's being used for.
I never had much of an issue with whatever castol SMX is called this week, the box was a but crunchy into 4th and made some worn out bearing noises.

All three sychro hubs are scrap, input shaft ->mainshaft pilot bearing is heavily worn and all the other taper roller bearings are a bit tired. Other then the state of the synchros it's about what you'd expect after 125k miles.
