Early cars suffered from fuel evapoisation. Cooler sorted it.

Did they? I know quite a few early cars without it, and they're fine. And mechanically, the early car is the same as a later S1 too (like mine).

Oh no they didn't*. They may have suffered from evaporation or even vaporisation. But definitely not evapoisation laugh

This got worse until the thing stopped and wouldn't refire. We finally got it going by turning around and jump starting it while running down hill. I found out about these fuel coolers then but never got around to doing anything about it. I have not had the problem since but have not been in the same conditions either.

Had the same problem in the Alps (Tsjimmeljoch) on a very warm day. My solution was to loosen the connection on the fuel filter a second to let the vapour escape. The day after (same warm conditions) we insulated the fuel lines and pump in the area of the fuel tank /exhaust and drove up hill on the Stelvio without any problems.
